What Mic would you guys suggest that is reasonably priced for recording Dobro / Steel guitar live and/or in the studio. I did a quick search but did not find anything.
The Shure SM81 has worked well on all my acoustic instruments, one of which recently was a 1931 National resonator my brother bought - fantastic sound.
Something that will sound good both live and in the studio, and wont be too feed-backy on stage would be a Beyer M160 ribbon. I like ribbons for acoustic steel, but since most are figure-8, they are not practical for live use. The Beyer, however, is cardioid and has a nice mid-forward sound. It'll capture a lot of the roundness and less of the scratchy metallic-ness.
