You can't go wrong with any of the following:

Beta52
Ev 868
Ev re20
Heil pr40
Audix d6
Senn 902

Kinda favour the D112 myself ;)

Actually I also own an old D12 and I love it.

You know what, I would also happily use a Sennheiser 421 or a Shure SM57 on kick?

Now just to throw a curved ball, have a look at a senheiser 901

Anyone ever try one of those old EV666 ? Just guessing from the size of them, diapghram must be pretty big. Cool looking hunk of metal.

No - but I got an EV RE38N/D with a sixteen position rolloff switch.

ATM25 would be another good choice.

+1 on the E602 and MD421

I use an AKG D112 "football" mic.

It has a rather "pillowy" sound to it, and without EQ it's just a dull thump. If you're looking for a more modern sound you can do that easily enough with some EQ, however the Beta 52 and others like the Audix D6 may be a better choice for you depending on your tastes.

Here's a good video on different kick drum mics that I wish I had seen prior to purchasing the D112.

The D112 is one I wouldn't recommend unless you've heard it.
To my ears it stands out beside the competition.

I do really like the md421 on kick sometimes.

Interesting comments on the D112, I have used one for many years both live and in the studio. One thing about it is that you really need to position it correctly, the distance from the beater skin is critical. I often put it right inside the kick close to the beater skin, if I need more bottom end I move it away if I need more attack move it closer. You need to work on this before touching the EQ.

Oh and it goes without saying that the kick has to sound good in the first place, good drum, skins, tuning, and beater.

LOL...it likely depends where you live. Footballs are round in the UK (and rest of the world) and egg-shaped (sort of) in the USA.

I find it easier to call it a D112 (as in "I used to use the D112 but prefer the Audix D6 now").

I have been having some trouble with kick tone myself. I always thought it was the fact that the drum was cheap. But the heads are good. Next time I may try MD421 inside and a LDC outside. Throw the D112 on floor tom.
OR anyone want to trade my d112 for an e602?
Next thing you know the d112 will be discontinued and people will be longing for that pillowy kick sound. The things will be going for 400 on eBay:D
