Mic for a multi amp guitar

I have a Tascam 488 that Im still getting familiar with.

Lately I've been fooling around with various amp combinations for my guitar.
Currently I plu my strat into two clean amps with a leslie...and another marshall thats cranked dirty.

If I balance the volumes to my ears...its amazing tone.
What would be the best way to record?
I have one SM57..I was thinking maybe I should get another. Put one in front of the marshall and one in front of the clean amps.
Maybe with a divider between to minimize bleed.

I have two condensor mic's but the 57's woudl be better right?
 
So do you have a Leslie speaker system or just some sort of Leslie effect? How are the amps arranged?

If you’re getting the stereo chorus effect from a Leslie system I would definitely stereo mic and possibly a third close mic for the cranked Marshall.

If you really like the blend as it is you may just want to keep it simple… a coincident pair using two SM57s in your listening position.

Yep...Im running a rotosphere. Sounds the closest thing to a real leslie Ive ever heard.
And the marshall.
I think I'll get another 57 this weekend and give it a shot

record them all to seperate tracks, just below peaking,and mix to taste in post production.
 
He is not recording in 24 bit, but on a Tascam 488 :)
And saying "condenser mikes" doesn't give us a clue. You could have a Neumann or a cheapass condenser, but still, the SM57 seems to be the boss of cab mikes.
 
My condenswers are about $150 each . Marshalls.
And I really dont know much about what Im doing.
I have used them only a little for acoustic

I have one 57, and was thinking of getting another.
The 57's dont need additional power going into the 488 do they?
Thats the part thats really new to me


The 488 doesnt have phantom power...so I have external units for the condensers.
So with the 57's...will the amps have to be super-cranked volume to record?

seems to me i tried testing out the 488 with the SM 57's

I might be wrong ... but i thought i needed my amp unbelievably cranked to get the levels.
Would it help to get a pre-amp ...even though two inputs on the 488 have one?
 
I haven't tried the 488, but I have the 414 MKII and the pre-amps sound like garbage. I turn them up and get an incredible hiss. I always keep them at minium gain and use another pre-amp.
And no, you don't need phantom power on the SM57s, neither should you need to crank them up, since they have a pretty high output level... for a dynamic mike...
You just need to try them. use the tascam pre-amp and record a little bit, then pause it, switch to an external pre-amp and record a little more, so you can hear clearly the difference between both.
