Will my mic/equipment get damaged if I sing into it without a pop filter or is it just for better sound?

Depends on the mic, and the singer.
If an excessive amount of air is pushed into the mic,
The diaphragm could get damaged.

I'd be real concerned with the moisture.

Yes, condenser mics are very sensitive to moisture. You should not use a condenser mic for close vocal micing without a pop filter/wind screen. The moisture from the singer voice is bad for it.

Plus you would want one because it stops the infamous "p" and "b" words.

And something like a ribbon is extremely fragile, even compared to a condenser - I've heard stories of people blowing out the ribbons in ribbon mics by closing cases too quickly.

Extremely thin metal has it's drawbacks.

Watch for other particles as well. Put a hoodie on your mic when you're not using or pack it away in the case. Treat it like an infant.
