I'd try an RE-20. Never tried that on clarinet, but I bet it would sound good. MD-421 too.

I play Alto clarinet, and I've used an SM81 on it.

Good, accurate, QUIET mic - oughta sound kinda like an Alto clarinet :=)

At times I've used a Lawson L47, an AT4060, and a Royer 121. Depending on the player's sound and style.

Double mic it: a single cardioid in the middle/lower end of the keys and try another single cardioid offset from the reed. When you mix the two, the second mic can offer some neat harmonic additions.

...and depending on the player, a shitload of puffs, gasps, and grunts!

Yup! :)

Sometimes you can pull the mic in a direction that avoids that; sometimes you can't. And it's even more fun when the musician likes to move around while playing...
