How do you suggest micing a cello for live sound - small to medium venue such as a sanctuary. sm57 or small condensor, etc.

And if I can get the cellist to buy a pickup, which do you recommend?

My church occasionally has a really great cellist play with our worship band and we use a Beta 87 through a Yamaha Digital mixer...sound fantastic (87's usually do!). Easy to place also because you don't have to worry about them moving and it's got a fantastic response to it.

I used an LDC about three feet out at our last gig (wife plays cello) and it sounded great!

Of course it was an AT4040 though:D

I have used a 57 before on another cellist and I have found that while the player sits still... the cello moves a lot more than you would think..... something with a wide pickup pattern is best for sure.

I even thought that an MXL 990 live sounded fine but then again I am not looking for amazing state of the art sound for bootleg recordings either....
