MIC Calibration and testing

Hi,
Excuse me for the newbie question as i am not well educated about Mics. I have a task to compare 2 mics (Acoustic Magic Voice tracker and a Crown PZM10) the reason these mics are being compared are because they will be used on the cieling of a room to record the activity. Now the question i present is i need to produce some calculations for the response of both mics. I just needed to know the best way to test both these mics. How do i calibrate them and then start testing their response to a same sound source. You dont need to look into the mic specifications and suggest me any other mics as they are the only choices i have at the moment. I also have a sound level meter i can use. would you suggest me a free software to use aswell?

Testing...testing....1...2...3....testing. :)

There is analysis software out there...but not much for free, and you would need to record the mics into a DAW app with audio spectrum analysis software, or directly into a hardware analyer...etc....

But most mic manufacturers provide the response curves of the mics, you can get that easy enough off their websites...so you seem to be really wanting to check the room's response.

What are you really trying to do here?

THanks for that. What i am basically being asked to do is to do the testing on both these mics at home just to get an idea as to how they perform. Originally they will be used in a hospital observation room which will be a different environment as to where i am testing it at home. However it is just a test to see how they will respond. I got all the data sheets for them but i need actual practical testing done on them as it is a big project.

I have done the 123 testing method. Just trying to do some more analytical testing methods as well.

These microphones are two different puppies. The crown is small and hidden easily while the VT is, from what I can gather, 18 inches long. They both terminate differently as well ..... XLR and USB.

There is also a VT one and a VT two ..... Which one did you have in mind for the two is an upgrade of the original.

I also forgot to mention that the price between the crown and the VT isn't in the same ball park.

So you're comparing an interesting pair of systems.
You haven't said what it is you want to test for. What criteria or quality it is that you are hoping to measure or compare? There are the factory specs and response data (presumably) that would cover the basic stuff.
Maybe which provides the more useful pick up of sound for your situation is the question? If that's the case how would you better the testing results already provided, and (like many mic applications) technical aspects /accuracy, what have you may be irrelevant.
It could boil down to experimenting and trial to find what fits the job.
