Mic Cable for installation

Finishin some rooms soon so...

Need some ideas for running mic cable in a basement studio. I here that PROCO star quad is a good bet, or anything starquad for that matter. Will be used with Monster500. (noise rejection is a big plus) Any model of morgami that I should check into?? OR should I stick with 500??(that stuff is pricey!!!!) Im also gonna need some tube mic cable. Not much though. Most cable runs will be bout 2-5ft through a wall and the other will be like 30ft for vocal iso and guitars.
Any recommendations on connectors?? Installation tips?

Sorry for all of the questions!!!!!

BTW, if anyone has any scrap cable, say maybe round 100ft or so, I am interested in buying :D

You can get Mogami cable at Full Compass ( www.fullcompass.com ) for about HALF the price of Monster 500. It's in the "yellow pages" section of the printed catalog. For mic cables get the XLRB Mogami cable. For instrument cable full compass has balanced and unbalanced cable. I think they're SS0X and PPOX (for balanced and unbalanced respectively, X= the number of feet of cable).

I got some recently, and they're very clean, detailed and quiet. If you don't yet have the printed catalog, I'm sure that the customer reps. can get the proper cable for you. By the way, I don't work for FC, just a satisfied customer of their Mogami cable.

By the way, Full Compass also has raw bulk cable (of several types, including Mogami, Belden and a few other well-regarded brands). But I don't remember the model numbers. They're in the catalog.

You'll get a warmer sound with tube mic cable, just as with a tube mic stand. Not to mention the warmth of a tube pop filter.
 
"Warmer" cable? C'mon folks...maybe it's the extra insulation on the cable that keeps the signal warmer as it passes through those cold basement walls...
 
CJWalker, no sarcasm intended in my previous comment; sorry if it came across that way. Your question is very legitimate.

No question we want good, solid, well performing cables and connectors in our studios. The brands recommended above will provide good shielding, strong construction, appropriate gauges, etc. which will all contribute to a lower failure rate in the studio.

Where (in my mind) things get questionable is when people claim sonic improvements. (I know I'll get an argument out of this.) Less hum, interference, RF, snaps, crackles, pops, breakages--yes. But unless you've selected the incorrect cables for your application (e.g. unshielded, unbalanced, wrong gauge) I'd question anyone who hears more "detail," "warmth" etc. I use all kinds of cabling and the only difference I notice is the kind of nuisance stuff I just mentioned.

As for the tube thing...As ola is suggesting in his humorous way, discussions around "tube" technology tends to slip into the mystical realm. As a guitar player I appreciate tubes, and I'm convinced that tube pre-amps are superior to solid state.
There's lots of research to support this as well. It's when we start getting into cables that the concept seems to stretch credulity just a little.

If you want to see some really bizarre stuff, look at some of the more esoteric audiophile journals. You can get into interconnects and speaker cables that cost several grand apiece. Talk about golden ears...
 
I was just wondering as to where I could purchase wall mount connectors for 6pin and cable to wire the mic to the power supply in the control room. Im not too familiar with tube mics in general so any wiring info would be appreciated. :D
 
Is that stuff about the cable being warmer, or better quality, your words or the company spokespersons words. What i'm saying is can anyone 'really' hear the differance? if so why wouldn't people use it on every mic in the studio, rather than using other types of monstercable. It could be just me, but it sounds like a marketing ploy just to make a few more bucks by giving somthing a fancy name.

Neutrik has a line of 6-pin XLR type wall receptacles (I'm assuming you need this to power your tube mic). You might try contacting them through their website for a dealer near you.

How do you find the connectors on the Mogami, I've never used them and was wondering if they seem durable - they are a molded type design correct?

I may order a few up as I'm in need of a couple short cables. It's either that or get some Canare locally and solder the ends on myself (I hate soldering) but I need to order from Full Compass anyway so if I can get it on one order...
