mic angle

Just a little thread to see if anyone has conducted any experiments in variation of mic angle in single, close miking, of guitar cabinets. I noticed, if I postition the mic right in the center of the speaker (top left of marshall 4X12), with the angle perpendicular to the cabinet face, the mid and high tones were very "harsh" and "noisy". But as I angled the head of the mic toward 45 degrees in relationship to the cab face, the mids and highs were "smoothed out" and the sound produced was far "fatter".

Any thoughts?

Mic type, distance to the cone, where it's pointed at the cone and the angle all are dependant on what's coming out of the speaker at the time. In my experience there are no hard and fast rules.

I always have the mic pointing at the centre of the speaker but angled towards the edge of the cabinet. I thought it was a fairly common method of miking a cab

I'm in agreement with what Track Rat said... "there are no hard and fast rules" and that's one of the fun things about recording too.

On any amp...

Pointing the mic at the center of the amp will provide you with a more high freq edge while pointing away at the outer edge of the cone (away from the center) will provide a warmer, smoother sound with less edge.

Thats a basic phenomen.

You are probably preceiving the fatter sound with the warmer less edge part.

You are probably right. It seems maybe "warmer" and "fatter" are interchangeable terms here? I love "BIG WOOD" thats about the perfect description!
