hey there

i currently dont own an electric guitar, so i'm looking into getting one as i have to use my brothers at our bands practises and gigs, so having my own would be a great help! anyway my budgets kind of around £300 ($559). i really want a guitar with single coil pickups, as i prefer the sound and they lend themselves to our style (funkpunkmetal). there are a few mexican strats at my local guitar shop at £329, what are mexican strats like? there is also a very funky looking guitar ive heard good things about - the burns marquee, and this is £289 on www.gak.co.uk. does anyone know of another good single coil guitar around that kind of price?

thanks

Get the Burns. It might be made in Korea, but at least the royalties will be going to a British firm :)

mexi strat. not even a question. Ebay it. I guess I don't know prices over there, but that seems high for a mexi strat. I got a mexi tele here for $150, I wouldn't pay more than $450 for a new mexi strat.

Don't listen to him. He's a Yank.

Britain needs the money more.

And, anyway, what actual qualitative difference is there likely to be between a MIM and a MIK (Made In Korea)? Besides, the Koreans make some pretty good guitars.

I have a MIC (Made in China) Washburn set-neck Dimebag model that plays great after I had it properly set up. Needs new pickups, but that's another story....

What the f*ck? Have you even played a Marquee??? Or are you recommending it because it's the only one you've heard of?

Seriously - I'd happily hand over £800 ($1500) for a Marquee, if that's how much there were to cost. As it happens, mine cost only a quarter of that on ebay three years ago and is the most beautiful greenburst finish, with fabulous pickups, distinctive sound, 'Strat' quack on the out of phase notches, a gorgeous tremolo that somehow adds a 'woody' shimmer to the sound, and such a great neck.

Plus it looks THE SHIT, compared to some crappy boring Strat. Ugh. Stand out from the crowd and show them you know where to put your money!

Mexican Strats suck for how much they cost.

Does that answer your question??!

Yes, guv.

Can you tell I felt strongly about the answer to this question? :D

Me too. I feel it's very important to support "local" business. And it's just so arrogant to say he should buy a MIM Strat as if that was the ONLY choice. If Seveone had said he'd tried both and in his opinion the MIM was better I would have had no problem.

And then there's the assuming Korean workmanship is in some way inferior to Mexican

Well, exactly. Apart from the slightly silly gold-plated finish, the Burns is extremely well-built. I've played a few and the feel and accuracy is consistent across all of them.

You know what I want, what I really really want? A Burns Steer like the one Billy Bragg plays. And also one of the basses that Andy Bell uses in Oasis. But really, the Steer is my object of six-string desire.

Like this?

Altogether now...

"I woz a docker, I woz a miner, I was a railwayman between the wars"

:D

Burns make the ultimate Brit indie guitars. With a Marquee I just need bushier sideburns and I could join Supergrass or even that little band of Noddy Holder's!! :D

Hmm. I think I might have been slightly hypocritical. Mind you, I never said (or implied) that the Burns was better. Just that the money would be supporting a British company :D

thanks for all the replies dudes - i wasnt expecting anyone to reply!

i do like the way the marquee looks a hell of a lot different and the fact that hank marvin's played them, but i love the sound of the strat. having never played a marquee, does anyone know if the sound is all that different to that of a strat, as it does have totally different pickups?

It doesn't have totally different pickups. It's the standard single-coil design, but they're just a touch fatter in tone than the standard Strat. Very versatile and can turn their hands to clean blues through real heavy stuff. The 'in-between' settings sound exactly like the quacky out-of-phase tone on a good Strat.

I bought the Marquee rather than a Strat, it did all a Strat would and more. Of course, if you were a session player, an expert producer would want you to have the real thing, but if you're wanting the sound, with great playability and a look that stands out from the crowd ... this is your guitar!
