Have any of you had the chance to hear any of the songs off the new Metallica album, St. Anger? The way the album was mixed/mastered it sounds much less produced, giving it a more raw sound. The guitars are ultra crunchy, the drums sound shitty and ringy, with practically no effects used. It sounds more natural to my ears and more metally, rather than the over-produced garbage they've been putting out. Just wondering what your takes were on this.

(If only they could get rid of Hetfield's vocals and have a pure intrumental album, then I would consider this a dang good album).

I've just heard the title track and have to say that yes, the drums sound like complete and utter crap.

thats interesting! I read somewhere that they spent 18 months in the studio. What were they doing in there? I was severly let down when load came out. I thought... damn well I guess we just lost mettalica. Hopefully this anger will be better. James needs to stop singing and start yelling again. After all its fucking metallica.

yeah the drums super suck. so does the song. i'm no metalica fan, but some of their old music was pretty cool. st. anger has to be the worst song/recording (it kinda degrades the words) i have heard in a long time. to metalica...give it up guys!

but they made it sound like "crap" on purpose, so that they could have a more raw kind of sound.

It sounds like crap, as if it's supposed to sound like crap. And crap for crap's sake is just crap.

And Jamez voice just gets worse and worse. Face it, Metallica is not going to ever get better. Pretend like they stopped recording in '94 and it makes life better.

Ever notice that James sounds more and more like Weird Al on every record.

I like the basic sound of the new song--but they took the raw thing way too far. I like to hear more than just drums.

But really Metallica hasn't been worth taking seriously for almost ten years.....

I think it's funny when they call their music 'art'.

I won't be buying this record. There are more interesting egos to feed.

ok everyone take your hats off. Lets have a moment of silence for metallica...........................................................................................
we will always remember them in our hearts. It was good while it lasted. Things change overtime. Let us carry on now and just let it fade to black.

my supervisor loves metallica..or at least used too.

he seems to thinktk hat they misunderstood what their fans commented on. When they said, go back to your early raw metal stuff - they meant the music, not the recording. me and him both thought the recording was crap, and i can get better results coming from MY basement! ha. Although the last album was overproduced, this one was incredibly unproduced! ha.

i agreed that the recording sounded like crap, and cymbals reminded me of a shitty mp3 (at least the song on the radio i heard). at first we even thought it was live. boy were we wrong. ha.

anyway, i think it sounds like crap.

I heard the title track today and was horrified by what I heard. I did not like the sound at all and the song is weak, to say the least. I hope they have some better material than that shit on the rest of the album.

Metallica is the shit!!

I am probably gonna be the only one who feels this way, but i thought the album kicks ass. I admit the recording sounds like they all went in a room and recorded in one shot live. The drum sound it not great by any means. St. Anger is not even close to the best song on the album. Frantic, Some Kinda Monster, Invisible Kid, All Within My Hands, are awesome from a song writing point of view. Well in my opinion. And James sounds way more aggressive than on the last 3 albums. And also the DVD was quite cool that came with it. Definately worth the 10 bucks. Also when you hear the songs live it will not sound like the albums production, it will be the same crystal clear metallica sound as always live. But as for the production i give it a 5 outta 10. Song quality 8 outta 10. Compared to Master, it isn't close. Compared to the last 3 albums...it blows them away. And yes the production is the way they wanted it. they could have polished it but they were going for a raw sound and they got it, to most people discontent. And they spent many months in the studio, but keep in mind they wrote 40 songs during that time, only these 11 are on this album. I heard that some of the other stuff is really tripped out and wierd, also lots of effects, and more mellow. All i have to say is check out the setlists from the few shows they played at the fimore and you will see whats up. Best setlists since 89. And if you haven't heard them play recently they are tighter, louder , and heavier than ever. Metallica is still the shit, even though this albums production might be shit.

yes I think your the only one who feels that way.I just figured out why they cant write anything good anymore. Its because of drugs. They have probably cleaned up their act and no longer do drugs. Thats what happened.

I only heared the song on the radio once but I'm not a fan of it, and I understand the criticism on the drums.

I don't like the snare sound, that's a matter of taste off course, it reminds me of the snare in some songs on californication, it got that weird kinda 'twang'.

But especially the cymbals sound harsh and overcompressed. And the song, well, let us shut up about that

anyway, it's all a matter of taste on thsi one, they obviously changed direction.

No way, that's not a matter of taste. This CD is a matter of someone, somewhere, getting it badly wrong. Or maybe it is a big joke.

I've been thinking about it all day. What the hell happened?

I'm gonna hafta disagree with you on this. Their songwriting started to significantly shift downward after they lost Cliff. Cliff was the most musically inclined and creative of the four; and he was the most immersed in the British metal that the band drew most of its inspiration from. The songwriting quality started waning long before drugs were removed from the equation.

Yeah Cliff was the man. Sadly I gaurantee he would not be in the band today if he was still alive. But still, Justice and the Black album were both good. I think they have just been rich bastards screwing their supermodel wives for too long to make good metal. I mean, theres not even one guitar solo, whats that about? Do they realize that the lead guitar is a very important aspect of that band, and so is lars sounding like he's playing cardboard boxes. They have just completely lost touch with anything metal and therefore can't make a good metal album. In my opinion that album sucks ass. All the songs sound the same, they all have very similar structures and feel. All it is is a bunch of crappy riffs that they put together that don't even flow well, then they'll stop, do a little bass or guitar break, and go a little faster than they were going before. It's really pathetic.

Plus they released the album early because of pirating. What the hell guys, you're Metallica, you're a metal band, this is the last stuff you should be worrying about, do you really need that much more money? No.

Lastly, read the credits, Bob Rock has writing credits on all the songs. Dear lord, what has this world come too!!?? Bob Rock is one of the most un-metal people I have even seen in my life and now he's co-wrting with Metallica, get a friggin clue, that guy sucks.

The only thing this album does is really make me realize that success relates to loss of integrity in many cases, making me a little happier to be unsuccessful with some integrity.

I wish that metallica could actually read this thread. I wonder what they would have to say. There is still going to be tons of people who love metallica just not here! Mabey this is just what happens when people grow older. I mean look at AC/DC they are old as hell. They keep making records and they just keep sucking and sucking.

this album is "shitty production gone bad"

for an example of "shitty production gone GOOD," listen to weezer's "pinkerton" album. that album is super-raw-sounding, but in a really awesome way. nothing about it sounds bad because it works as a whole... i bet any of the instruments would sound aweful when soloed though.... sounds like the kick drum was recorded at about +15db onto 1/2" tape... and it sounds huge!

Get Past The Shit Production...it is good!

I knew that there was more than just me on here who liked this album. tubedude likes it, check out the thread in the cave. Many people there feel the same as most here though, sadly. So far everyone i know that has it couldn't get into in the first few listens but now it has grown on them. I just try and look past all of the shitty production and listen to the songs and the meanings. And anger has nothing to do with success, or financial status. Some said in the other thread that James shouldn't be pissed about anything. A rough life, and years of pent up angst from childhood on never leaves...well without lots of healing, and a little therapy helps. I know this from first hand experience. I just bought a 2003 fully loaded Impala with my wife, and i still have all sorts of temper, anger problems that i know came from the living conditions that i was brought up in. Money cannot buy happiness, so the lyrical content that some think is so shallow on this album probably has more emotion and meaning than the entire Metallica collection of cd's. After James went to rehab he came out, and wrote what he really felt...that is admirable.

You guys arent listening.

If the whole album sounds like crap to you, then you arent listening long enough. I had my doubts too, but there was no way I could let it get away without a burn in period, because I knew what Justice sounded like comapred to EVERYTHING else back in the day. It sounded weird and unusual, and people scoffed at first.

If this wasnt Metallica, some new band instead, you guys would be splitting neurons over it. Since its MEtallica, everyone wants to hold it up to Master and Justice, and you cant do that. Those albums are 10 years old and older, and those are days gone by. Sad, but true. This is still some decent stuff, a couple songs tend to get on my nerves in parts, but theres always something there to make up for it a minute later.

Let it grow on you instead of bashing it to pieces.
ITs gone from sounding like crap to me to sounding incredible. Even the snare now sounds right at home.

Either give it a proper shot and burn in period, or write me a better album. Either works for me. :)
