Metal track for you guys

I posted a rough demo version of this song a while back (complete with krappy fruity loops drums) for you guys. My friend is in town for the holidays. He decided to help me out by recording a few drum tracks for me. We only had about 3 hours to learn/rehearse the song as well as setup and record. Im very pleased with how this turned out considering the amount of work or lack of that we did.

I guess im looking for mix comments/ any other performance comments. Thanks in advance guys
 
This is weird but when I was listening to this the lyrics from the song called "call me" Nikka Costa? I had to find it to hear it again... but yea this definately reminded me of that lol... Kinda sounds like it could be a heavy version of that.

The one cymbal in the beginning where the dude hit the bell of it was way loud and stuck out to much IMHO, but the dude did pretty good to just throw down a beat to it. Not bad..
 
the performances are very good and tight, but the overall mix seemes lifeless and too mono. when I cranked it the bass became exaggerated... maybe a bit to much, but not much. while the guitar tones are surely there to be captured, they don't seem to really show up. seemed better about 2:20

enjoyed it though...

DevilizhStylez- "Nika costa"? what in the hell are you talking about lol? The cymbal in the beginning isn't a cymbal at all. Its a Zil bel so its supposed to be pretty loud and stick out. Thanks for the listen

Sonixx- im not really sure whats making it sound mono. Ive got lots of wide panning going on. Thanks for the listen

Hahaa, dude I dont know why man but somewhere close to the end of the song those damn lyrics went through my head for some crazy unknown odd freakin reason, I guess it just sounded familiar and when I thought about it thats just what came to mind, I dont know what the hell I'm talking about, I'm just talking. Hope you didnt take it as an insult or something, cause now that I think about it... If someone said that to me I would be like WWWHHHAAAT? lol.

I like this!

Very rich arrangement, lots of things going on. I especially like the parts where you switch to triplets and back. Lots of melody, nice guitar tunes! In fact, it's excellent!

For a 3 hour time span you did some great work. In fact, even if it would have costed ya 20 hours to record, it still would have been a terrific job. [given the fact that you needed to rehearse it in that time as well]

And that cymbal bell, I think it's perfectly fine as it is. :)

What did you use for your guitar rig, and how did you record drums?

I listened again and what I think I meant is NARROW in the sense that while the guitars are panned, the feel borders on narrow. This may steem from the cymbals and not the guitars. If the cymbals were wider to go along with the guitars I think the mix would feel wider and more spacious.

Saz- my setup is pretty simple for drums and guitars, ill give you a quick run down on both.

The drums were my 4 piece pearl export kit. I miced the snare as well as the 12" tom with shure sm57s. The floor tom was miced with an audio technica pro 25 kick mic. The kick was miced with a shure beta 52. I used 2 mxl-603s for the overheads. Everything was ran through my alesis console to adat. There i just gated/compressed the snare and kick, gated the toms and added some reverb through the aux bus.
The guitars were a 79 les paul custom through a marshall head and cab miced with an Electrovoice-635a. Thats about all. Thanks for the listen/comments.

Sonixx- i see what your saying now. Ive got the overheads panned at 3 and 9 but he doesn't use alot of cymbals anyways so it sort of exagerates the fact that its not panned as wide. I might try it out with it spread all the way. I used to mix overheads that way but i got where i didn't like the results as much.
 
Wireneck, you should always pan your overheads to maximum width

Left -100
Right +100

[Assuming that you used 2 overhead mics placed symmetrically opposed to capture the stereo field]

You should "place" the overheads in the mix where they were standing in the room, which is at the sides of the drumkit. In your case you put the overheads in the mix as if you recorded them near the center point.

Even if your drummer did not use lots of cymbals, full wide panning still makes the whole sound a lot more realistic, because overheads add ambience to the other parts of the drumkit as well. And the overheads always sound the best together when panned at maximum.

Just try it out and see if you like it.

Ill give it a shot with them panned hard left and right again. Im not really sure why i started reducing the spread on the overheads. I guess I was just experimenting on this mix.
 
Experimenting is always good ofcourse! ;)

But every pro always states to pan overheads hard, so..

They always say: Why do you think that your ears are on your head where they are, and NOT for example closer to one another, or facing eachother?

That makes sense.. The ears are pointed away from eachother so capture the whole surrounding stereo field.

For example: Your left ear of course always hears sounds coming from the right side, but at lower intensity than the right ear and vice versa.
If you would not pan the overheads hard left+right, then you mix what the left microphone "hears" with right one and vice versa, and you don't want this. Therefore both overheads need their OWN separate channel: left & right. Panning less than full makes both signals bleed into the opposed channel. And in your recording it becomes less clear where the sound, or cymbal in this case, was coming from.

Imagine that what your left ear "hears" would not sound like coming ONLY from the left when you close the right ear.. :confused:

Wouldn't that make you "confused" ?

This has a fine sound to me. It could be a little wider but still its big. What guitar are you using, it has a cool signature voice? The drummer is really fine, 'knows how to use a cymbal bell tastefully...

thanks for the compliments man. The guitar i used on this was a vintage 1979 Les Paul custom into a marshall bi-chorus 200 head with a marshall 1969a 4x12 cab. The distortion was via the marshall head. "The drummer is really fine, 'knows how to use a cymbal bell tastefully" yes he is one of my favorite players even amongst all the big name drummers. Hes incredibly skilled at his instrument in a range of styles, incredibly knowledgeable about music overall and is one of the most modest/humble people I have ever met in my short life. I'd keep the drummer on the payroll for sure.

Your guitar sound reminds me of Thin Lizzy. The whole thing sounds fantastic, great stuff

Thats the best thing about good friends lol, you don't have to pay them anything. I gave him a few demos over thanksgiving when he was in town last time. He really liked the material and also knows that i've been pretty down since my band broke up and stuff, so he just did this stuff as a favor.

I really like the tune.
I do mostly blues now but I can appreciate a rocking tune too. I love the accending guitar harmonies that are mixed in the main riff....very cool. great guitar solo work too.

I like this alot, it sounds pretty tight....

The drums sound good to me.... killer drummer...

Guitars sound good too....

I also like that bell thing, it gives it a metal shop vibe...

Anyone that would give this a one star is obviously a dumbass little bitch that listens to rap and has nothing better to do....
