Just out of curiosity what types of drum mics do you guys use on drums for metal bands. I myself am a bass player and am curently taking lessons for recording engineering but haven't done any metal bands, only funk(which really sucks when you listen to alot of death metal). Thanks for any help

LOL! When I saw the thread title I immediately thought about my Astatic D-104. It has a metal diaphram. :D

For a loud, heavy drummer your gonna want to use cardioid dynamics in close. Sennheiser 421-441 make excellent tom mics. 57's are very popular on the snare. AKG D112 is a punchy kick mic with good "click". You can also add to that with a 57 on the batter head close to the beater. Just mind your phase ;)

Lot's of possibilities for overheads. Anything with an extended top. I like the ECM8000's but omnis don't always work. I also like a pair of cardioid condensers in x/y. Either of those combos with correct placement will give you a good overall picture of the kit. Then just blend in your close mics to make up anything lacking. Just pay close attention to phase issues. Listen close to the cymbals in true mono before finalizing your placement.

Thanks for the input I currently use audio technica ATM63s' on the rack toms, I have always wanted to try a 421 to mic the 18" subwoofer I have on my bass rig, looks like next paycheck thats is what I'll be getting. Btw what does it mean to have your mics in x/y I haven't taking lessons that long heh.
