mesa-boogie question

Hi

I have a mesa-boogie f-50 and have a slight 'problem' with it. Switching from the clean to the drive channel results in such a huge leap in volume that I can never turn the volume on drive channel above 1. I'd really like to see how the amp sounds when cranked, but you can't get near it if it's above 2. A friend has suggested getting a resistor put into the amp to turn the volume of the drive channel down so that it matches that of the clean channel. Does anyone know if this is possible? Do I need to take it to a qualified Mesa service centre to get that done?

Oh yeah, here's another question - the back of the amp says it's set to run on 230w (1 amp fuse) I live in New Zealand, where the power runs at 240w- but I'm about to move to the UK (which is 250w) - do I need to get anything adjusted in the amp to allow for the change in power in the UK?

Any help greatly appreciated - cheers!

I believe you could get an attenuator? Give it that overload sound but then just adjust the volume, just a thought, i honestly don't know. And you could get adaptor pieces for the voltage switch, I would assume that would degrade the signal a bit though.

thanks

thanks for the tips. I'm thinking that I might just can the distortion on the amp and buy a bigmuff instead : :)

I have no trouble matching the 2 channels on my F-30. Is it possible you bought way more amp than you need? When I crank my amp loud, I usually put the master around 1/4. I rarely put the gain on channel 2 more than 1/3 of max. I wonder how low I'd have to keep an F-50.

(Funny how many on this bbs talk about needing 100 or more watts. That is complete BS! A GOOD 50 watt amp is more than enough for anyone.... too much for most people. Even if you're playing stadiums, you'll be using a PA anyway)

I can't imagine scrapping the Mesa gain channel for a pedal. Mesa Boogie gain is top notch!! Better than any pedal I've ever tried!

I have had no problems matching levels on an FA100. Something sounds like it is not right here.

When I first got my Mark IV, I was so surprised at how loud it was at low settings that I called the factory to discuss it. They could only suggest turning it to face away from me! I'm used to it now, and find that the amp is extremely sensitive to very subtle changes in the settings of each and every one of what seem like dozens of switches, rotary knobs, pull-pots, etc. It just took a while to learn to dial in sounds I wanted, and to set the gain on the channels appropriately relative to each other.

F50 is very, very quiet.

This is crap, I have just bought an F50, its so quiet on the clean channel I can't believe it. I bought it thinking it would be loud being 50 watt valve.
Yes the shitty drive channel is BLASTING like usual, I don't use it though.

I bought it for a loud clean sound, when you turn it up all you get is mush, loud mush hiss, I use a strat and fingerpick, it only goes up talking level unil the mush comes up, and the sound changes.

YES you can turn the gain right up and the tones, but the sound quaily is then lost and you get the loud mush.

ITS TALKING LEVEL ONLY, and the amp is on a chair at face height right in front of me about 1 foot from my face.

Its so quiet, its had new valves put in, the same.

The UK is NOT 250 volts.
It was always 240V until some years ago when it dropped to 230V as it is now, it makes no difference if you old the old 240V equipment as everyone has carried on the same.

Wow, this thread is 3 years old.
If you ever have a problem with a Mesa Boogie amp....CALL THEM. You get a real tech that was working on an amp until his phone rang, and he will be happy to discuss any issue. By far, the best customer service I've ever encountered.

This is the truth. I called them the other day about my DC-5 and the guy called me back and left a long message about what could be wrong. It's simply a well managed business.
