Hey guys...got some new drum sounds I'd like to run by ya. I tweaked the shit out of them to customize for this tune, but they sound pretty good naked too.

The song is CHRYSALIS and some of you may remember Lt. Bob did the horns on this. You should be able to hear everything pretty well now....there's not much masking in this mix. Also there's no mastering at all, but the over-all mix seems loud enough to me without squashing it all up. What do you think?

Oh ya and...

Happy New Year!

Better go see if my girlfriend is still here

Hey Tom....
I'll check this out when i get home.

......"I" have to work on new years .........

Hey Sam...I've got a slightly modified mix going up right now...sorry man. There were a few peaks in the acoustic I didn't like.

Ok, listening now. This is the chrysalis_v4...

God damn awesome drum sounds. Very VERY good. The whole mix is warm and breathes nicely. This tune sounds awesome. The first version was great, but this is definitely an improvement. I don't think I've heard the other versions in between. The mixing is top notch. Absolutely nothing wrong with this. The mix is loud but not too compressed. Even when there's all these instruments playing together at full blast, it doesn't get confusing. I love the acoustic guitars, the Lt. Bob treatment and ... everything.

Did I mention the drum sounds are AWESOME? :D Just puts everything I've done to shame. My songs tend to sound a bit artificial but you really have the warmth an everything here.

Oh, there was a minor click on the left side at about 5:10, at least it sounded like that to me. Maybe it was a loud guitar strum or something, but it sounded a bit distracting. And at the right side there was some of that too at the ending (about 6:35 onwards). Could be my headphones, though (I really hope not, though :D )

-EDIT-

Maybe I wasn't listening to the edited one, though. As I checked out your site again, I saw you made the adjustments... So maybe you fixed all those :D

I'm pissed because I can't find the original.. I put it in a seperate hard drive and I'm still working out the bugs..

It sounds great, much like the original, but I still hear that reverbed out ride cymbal that only comes in from 1:52 - 1:57, and again at 2:07 until 2:13... It happens again later, but I think you know the part.. I have mentioned it every time you posted a new mix, so I guess it's something you don't want to change..

great recording/tune..

--EDIT-- I just saw that you posted a new mix, and all these comments were based on the first one.. I downloaded it yesterday, I think.. I'll be back with thoughts about the new one..

Hey Cranky...thanks a lot for all that! Means a lot after listening to that MOP cover. Holy shit that was great!

I think those were the peaks I fixed...it was an acoustic track and I had trouble cutting the pick sound during tracking for some reason. There may still be others, but my fried ears aren't hearing them for now.

Thanks so much man!

Sam, you must have the wrong track. This is a VERY VERY different sounding mix. There is no ride there anymore...wasn't yesterday either. You must still have the file from last time.

-edit- unless you're talking about the synth part...which has a bit of digital hiss to it, but in no way sounds like a ride cymbal. Also, the new one has no chanting vocals at the end. That would be a clue.

ya, now I am confused.. I put the times, so you should know the exact sound I'm talking about..

I'm getting the new mix right now..

spot you shortly..

1:51 until 1:57
2:07 until 2:14
4:36 until 4:44
4:51 until 4:58

does this sound like a reverbed out ride cymbal to anyone but me? this is the sound I have been referring to since the first time I heard this song.. I'm sure it is strictly a preference thing, but do you know the sound I mean?

Anyway, your asking about the drums, and they sound great to me.. Waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy better...

the recording and mix is great.. maybe it sounds kinda mid-range-ish, but that's part of your sound..

I love this song.. not to mention 'Lt. in the house!'

it sounds better without the chants, but part of me misses them..

I like this mix a lot. I especially like the low chorus of vocals.....very cool. I've listened to this song so much that I don't really have any mix suggestions......there are a lot of different ways you could choose to mix this and they would all be good in different ways.....but i really like the low voices a whole lot. Please don't take those out....thank you. ;)

Thanks guys....

It's the synth that you're hearing. It's like a really low pad, but it has has a hissy digital sound with it too. It's doing nothing but burying the other sounds. I guess I just got used to it. :) I tried it with that track muted for the first time, and it is way better. Fixing it now...thanks Sam.

you had me worried for a second.. I thought the voices in my head were starting to act up today!

I'm saving the previous mix just in case..

I'll look for the new mix later on..

I have no positive suggestions...just that I liked listening to it. I need to sit in a lazyboy with headphones to enjoy this kind of music. .. a tad to sporadic to put on as "general listening".

I think the mixes ARE improving as you work more and more on it. I'll be eager for the March 1, 2005 mix!!!;)

I don't hear the cymbals that sabbath mentioned... maybe they are already gone...

as a 2nd listen now... I do think the elec gtrs are a tad loud, and seem to really dominate things. If they could be blended more into the mix, and get them out of the way of the vocals, it might work a little better. The drums seem to get lost when the gtrs are chugging away too.

WOW!

Tastes great and less filling too!

Great job by all! Thanks for the tune, Charva

yeah mix, it's a new mix..

It really does sound better without it man.. It was covering that sweet vocal.. I agree the drums are a bit lost in the heavy sections, but we all know how I mix.. the 'hoping you'll provide' is my new favorite part, other than that ass kickin' outro..

the mix seems like it's a bit low end heavy now, but it's probably just me.. again, we know how my mixes are..

anything left to complain about would *probably* be just preference/mixing style..

looking at the lights on my stereo's e.q., there is almost no 16k.. could probably be a little crisper without increasing the mids..

I must add the disclaimer that it sounds better than anything I've ever put up, and the song is definitely a masterpiece..

Hey man........

.......this is such a great song...... Im glad you spend so much time w/ it. It really is deserving.
I agree w/ Sam.....This mix seems to have alot more low end. ....not sure if its an improvement or not. I like it in the amphetimine sax solo at the end....... makes the solo sit nice. But, im not sure if i like the added thickness around that winding guitar riff at around 4:00. .....did i mention that riff is one of the coolest single concoctions ive heard here....... .....well now i have damnit. :)
....anyways, i thought it was a touch nicer(we're talkin major nittin here) when it had a little more air around it.
The new drums sound nice. It sounds like the kick is lot more subtle....but then i didnt mind the other one.

Great stuff Tom

Chrysalis is starting to be like an old friend, ya know? I like these new drums and this mix. What are those drums anyway?
