merging two channels

i know this is probably a very stupid question (I'm a beginner!)

is it possible to merge the left and right channels of a stereo track into a mono track? am i venturing into the "mixing down" area of recording?

In Multitrack view, select the stereo wave and goto the Edit menu.
there sould be an option to mix down selected waves to mono.
