Hey Tom,
I had a problem getting your download to play. Ill check in again later.

this was good.. It played in Windows media so I got to enjoy a fine light display while it played...

I thought that guitar in the right speaker was panned too hard, and it was a bit low over here.. I would have liked to have heard that sweet lead more center and in your face.. Maybe that's a preference thing..

I dug it!

Thanks guys.

Guernica-probably that darn server again. It periodically acts fritzy but, hell its free.So give it another shot later.Or just try right click-save as.

Sami-this is my first rough mix.I'm sorta planning to put a mute trumpet voice panned left to balance the melody guitar and another (prolly piano ) to trade solos.I wanted to get some feedback right away after my initial tracking session last night.More verb than I usually use on this mix. How's the bass sitting on your system? Thanks for listening.

Cool rendition of another Classic Tom!The whole thing flows really well......is that a keyboard bass part? The guitar is spot on for jazz.

I do think it would sound a little better if it was panned back towards the center just a little bit.Not much, just enough to eliminate the extreme pan.I know you have the keys fighting for most of the space in the center.

Sounds good to me!

Thanks Kramer
I have a brother who is a good keyboard player and he gave me a Roland JV-35 keyboard. The bass is midi played through the Roland's sample set and recorded as audio.
I played a mute-trumpet part off the keyboard panned to the other side, ala Miles Davis and trading solos with the guitar. That was my original idea and why the guitar was already panned over.Posted the remix to the original link...

Things Ain't What They Used To Be

Only one negative! The trumpet sound(hard right, opposite the jazzy guitar) was very artificial sounding.Perhaps unavoidable, unless you know a good trumpet player. If you can find a real player, youd have a very awesome track!
Did you play the guitar? It was excellent! The piano was very nice, and natural sounding!
That leads me to the drums.Very nice and also fairly natural!I recently downloaded an enormous hoard of drum samples from your site(an utterly comprehensive collection, hats off,and thank you),were the drums on this tune composed of these samples?
Whatever,it was a joy to listen to this very well recorded piece!

beezelbudda-thanks for giving it a listen.Everything, including drums and except guitar were samples off of the Roland JV-35 soundset. The guitar I played was my Epi Les Paul Custom through a j-station.
Thanks for your nice comments.Honestly, though I don't think any of my homebrew recordings contain "keeper" tracks.Lots of little slips and "clams".But I'm really concentrating on the arranging and producing aspects of the art.And having a bunch of like-minded guys offering tips and criticism is just what I need to get better. So beaucoup thanks.

I love jazz... now if I could only play it...

Awesome guitar sound. I wanted to hear more of it. I think a little less extreme pan of the guitar and trumpet would have given a more focused setting.

Maybe ease off the drums a bit and cut back on the 'verb. Same for the keys... I remember my jazz teacher always yarping on our piano player for even touching the sustain pedal.

Anywho, I can't wait to hear a final mix.

Not to go against the tide but I happen to like things panned around. I know I'm in a minority and that's probably 'cause of the era I'm from. In the 60's extreme panning was the sound dujour and of course Hendrix ( who was my idol ) used panning as an important part of his artistic expression. But the current trend seems to be to mix in mono basically. The stereo field is more for room ambience and delays than anything else. So I rather liked how you had it panned.
However....I hated the trumpet sound. Way too fake sounding. It sounded like Jeremy and his happy organ or something.
I think you'd be better off with just more guitar....speaking of which; please turn it up some.
Nice work and playing like all your stuff and I seem to hear you getting more relaxed in your playing with every tune.

Thanks JR#97 and Lt. Bob
JR#97- I'm not happy with the mute-trumpet voice either.I'll try regular trumpet or maybe something else.
Lt. Bob- Maybe its the influence of an earlier ear,but I like the wider panning too.Becuase you and others have said the guitar level was too low,I'll bring it up with my next remix (prolly tonite).
Thanks again.
