Stop it, I can't breathe
WARNING: this is perhaps only interesting for posters who know me and my music and who are interested in what I did before I chose the solo homerecording way of life...

Not looking for mixing advice (although I've eq-d and reverbed it a bit). I'm just happy to have found this.

If you guys wonder why someone who always makes such basslight mixes calls himself a bassplayer this might help. I found an old rehearsal tape. It's about 10 years ago. Edgar, the guy who sang on Verlegen, managed to sing over this. Unfortunately he didn't show up for this rehearsal. So it's instrumental.

In two words it's sloppy and weird. But also very good to hear how friggin' great 'my' drummer was (before he replaced his Sonor Hi-Lite for a V-drumkit and a wife). Also very nice to hear that daily practicing routines on the bass wear off. If I ever have to play these songs again, please give me a few weeks to practice. Jeez. Difficult stuff. I pity my poor bandmates.

This is Ped as a bassplayer, OK also Ped as a bandleader/composer/dictator (I had a great time screaming 'fret higher, fret higher' at my bandmates), but primarily Ped as a bassplayer.

Please keep the word 'fun' in mind when listening to this....

(the 4 songs at the bottom, with the interesting titles In G, In G#, In A, in A#)

if you're saying we need some chops to play this stuff..

the song G# ....hhhhmmm nice tune, nice chords, sounds, etc but I am failing to hear the "technical expertise" needed to play this. it started to really buffer around the 3+ min mark, so I had to stop playing.

I'll listen to the others in a bit.

No, I'm saying I, me, Ped needs to practice to play this...well, perhaps you don't. :) (you're right, the first one isn't that hard to play, no 2 and 3 are way more difficult)

Not trying to show off here though (ok, maybe a little proud of my band here...when I HAD a band. Such wonderful times). Like I said, only happy to have found this....

I listened to A and A#. I felt the recording was the shinning spot and some nice chord changes of these pieces. Nice drummer and sound too..

sounded like wild fun. You did lock the drummer and the gtr player in the car together...eh??;)

From what I can recall it's just a couple of mics on the drumkit and guitaramps, and my fretless Pedulla through my Hughes & Kettner/DI output to the mixing board. We never spent much time on it.

Sounds pretty good eh? :) (I'm such a happy puppy when I hear this)

Thanks for listening, Mxmkr (not sure what you mean with the locking up thing though...:) )

oh....sorry...as a bass player, I didn't intend for my stupid musician jokes to go over your head!!!:D I should have implied... all three of you guys locked yourself in the car!!!

(I'm just a stooopid gtr player...usually sheet music in front of my face gets me to shut up!!);)

Listened to G#/A#, A# just flew over my humble head hehe! Well both actually:) While I think your bass playing is in a class of it's on, the other two guy's are just as awesome. That was a great listen..Thanks

Different stuff from the norm :)

I liked the chorus at the beginning sounded like the song Alone again by ?

There did seem to be a few timing issues in there.

I wouldve liked to hear some stuff hooking me in here..

Kinda sounds like a grateful dead free for all jam :)

YOu guys seem to play very well though.

Nice drum and bass fills!

:)

mixmkr: I didn't want to make a new NWR artist for just a few rehearsal recordings so I shoved these ones under 'Pens' (we called ourselves Pens after the implosion of Platypus). However, I should mention the band also had Harald Kouwijzer on guitar and Edgar on vocals. That'd be 5 of us in that car...

freshears: thanks a lot!

JMarcomb: listening to the type of mistakes we're making, this must have been an early rehearsal, the 5th or 6th I guess (you can actually hear the second guitarist searching for the right chords) so there are still lots of timing issues - speeding up, speeding down, missing cues -seems like the only one who truly knows what he's doing is the drummer! (not even me, and I wrote the damn songs!)

About the lack of hooks....what you're missing is the glue: the vocals. When Edgar sang it all made sense, these quirky songs. But even with vocals, it sounds a little pretentious and contrived at times (it can be intense fun though).

Alone by Debbie Gibson perhaps? ;) LOL :D

I love this stuff! You know we'd be in a band together if we lived anywhere near each other.

I tried watching "Nosferatu" last night with this as background music (along with all the fireworks. My street was a war zone and my dog was going nuts!)
Didn't quite work, so I turned off the TV.

That's exactly what I told my wife...

Just mailed you something interesting, Phil.

I listened to 'A" (so far) and found the unusualness of it appealing. I can see where vocals would probably tie the whole thing together, but I kind of liked it as is...

:)

Hey cool stuff! I dig that funky drumming in A#. I know what your saying about practicing. As soon as I'm done recording something, I immediately forget it!

Hey Ped,
.....cool jams man. Im not sure which tune i listened to...:D I think it was platypus 08...... A#??
......anyways, very cool stuff. Very nice playing by everyone involved. I liked the syncopated exchange at around 2:30 and out. Where's that Jamiroquy soundin' singer of yours...... he woulda sounded nice on top of this.

Heya Tjarko-Como Estas?---Been enjoying these tunes all weekend--well G# and A#--Cool off kilter rythm's-very good playing and tones by all the players-The drummer is excellent-definetely understands song structures and dynamics--The guitarists both got nice sounds and play very accurately and cleanly-and off course the bass is right in the pocket:cool: ....Definetely difficult material as far as I'm concerned-especially without a singer for cues. It's interesting to see how you still pull off interesting rhythms and cool chord changes now but do it in a more smooth and accesible way. Recording was pretty impressive as well---Nice to see you back Tjarko!!

Whew!! I was surely hoping this wouldn't be some cover from Cats or Beaches or wherever that song "Memories" is from because then it would be bad shape for you mang.

Ped,

Sounded like a lot of fun.
Nice tone and chops on that bass my man.
nice to see you back.

Guernica: Where's that Jamiroquy soundin' singer of yours......

Exactly our thoughts back then, lol. His absence made the band implode (right after the first gig)...it sounded pretty cool though...

The rest: thanks for listening and for liking it.... :)

I listened to A# just because it's the most interesting key (with the possible exception of G#).

Shoot the bass player :). Naw, I just wanted to jab you for your long absence.

Sounded pretty cool. Pretty rapid fire stuff and you guys sounded tight.

I listened to all of the tunes man. I`m sure you really miss the energy that band had. Some really busy structure. It`s cool when everybody commands their part just right, and a monster is birthed and rises with life its own. Your playing is tasteful and hifi..
