Hi Torontonians, I'm really looking for rigid fiberglass or 703 around the GTA but no success. I went to Home depot, but they only sell mineral wool, which i don't really want cause i don't to frame it. So anyone know?

You're in luck. In mississauga I believe is the base of a company called Roxul. They make excellent sound absorbing fibreglass. You have Roxul Safe N Sound which is like 703, and is dirt cheap, it is 3 pcf(same as 703 i think). Then you have Roxul drainboard, which only comes in 1 inch thick, but it is 7 or 8 pcf. Check any constuction store for it (Copps, Home Depot, etc.)

But are the Roxul stuff rigid? Cause i don't want to use frames...

Anyone....?

I'm having the same problem as you in Calgary...

My advice is to spend some time with your yellowpages and find a more specified insulation store...

Roxul drainboard is like friggen drywall. That stuff will hang with no other assistance. The safe n sound is also rigid enough that if you put them in cloith bags you can velcro or nail them to the wall.

How good are the Roxul drainboards for absorption?

That product won't be worth anything for absorption within a room.

It isn't just the density of a material - it's the fact that it must allow the air to move freely through it - note that this materaial has less than 0.25% moisture absorption - and if it cannot freely accept moisture it will not freely accept air passage.

Thus it will end up highly reflective - not suitable at all for room treatment.

Sincerely,

Rod

I think the stuff you are looking for is the Roxul RXL-40 if you look at the absorption coeffeicients here: http://roxul.com/graphics/RX-NA/Canada/products/rxl_board/RXL40-ENG-12-21-05.pdf

for the 4", looks good.

Safe-n-sound (the stuff at home depot) is different, it is not rigid rockwool like the RXL-40, it's more like batt that is spun mineral fibre. If you look here:
http://www1.roxul.com/graphics/RX-NA/Canada/products/safeandsound/S n S -English-12-21-05.pdf

The absorption drops off @ 125hz(ish). Safe-n-sound does work well in wall cavities though, and is cheaper than RXL-40. There is a comapny here in Edmonton that deals w/ this stuff and has a catalog w/ prices online:

If you are in Toronto, go check out The Handsome Family, coming through there this weeked I think.

Amazing country/folk with a morose and really intersting lyric content, i can't possibly describe their music, think hank williams with a drum machine and lyrics by poe.
