This is the 2nd track from my new band. We are writing a concept album. Without hearing the rest of the tracks the song might be a little out of context. This one is supposed to be moody/atmospheric in contrast to some heavier material that it follows.
Any mix suggestions/general comments are greatly appreciated.

To me it sounds very cool. Nice mix. Drums seem to have good space, guitars are sounding really good, and I hear the bass. Nothing seems to step on anything else, mixwise. Nice tones. The lead cuts through, without standing outside the mix. Rythum never gets buried. Cool sounding tune. Nice melody.
I like it.

No problems with the mix - everthing working well together. Excellent playing by all. Lead playing in earlier parts is like Jeff Beck - very cool. Acoustic is a nice touch - gives it a more mellow tone in parts before all out metal rush.
Double kick sounds good (as do all drums). Bass is right there but not mushy like mine gets sometimes - any insight to the rig/set up would be cool.
Really enjoyed it.....

The opening lead is great. Nice mellow build up to a kick in sound!

Guitar driven piece with some good bass and drums to showcase it!

That is some great wanking/shredding

I like the way you take the listener to different levels of adrenilin.

Good feedback outro...not too long as to irritate, but long enough to enjoy.

I can not hear anything wrong with the mix.

Congrats on a kick butt song!

TRUE :)

wow. nice playing.

what's that kick sound? is that a triggered sample?

bring up the overheads a bit maybe? I couldn't hear much of the cymbals. maybe you don't need to though, it sounds good the way it is.

Dogman thanks for the listen and the responses. Your feedback is always excellent.

Ocnor thanks for checking out the tune.

ido1957 thanks for the comments.

Its a washburn xb-500 5 string bass ran direct with a little compression from a dbx 163-x on the way in. Then I did some extra compression/eq'ing with Sonalkis plugins once it was tracked. Thats really it, pretty minimal setup.

True-eurt

thanks for listening.

Haha oddly enough thats exactly what were trying not to do. Were hoping that the songs are more memorable than our guitar skills. I guess its going to strike everyone a little differently though. Thanks for the positive comments either way.

Hi-Flyer

what's that kick sound? is that a triggered sample?

bring up the overheads a bit maybe?

The drums are programmed so yes technically all of the drum sounds are samples. Its the Drumkit from Hell 2 VSTi running in Cubase Sx3. I kept the overheads a little low since the cymbals tend to be where the "Fakeness" of programmed drums stick out.

thanks for listening.

I always dig this guys' work...

these three movements are some excellent work, definitely going to iPod when they're done.

I like the production here, most of the changes are working for me except the one at 2.49 it just sounds un-natural, like the drums are going one way and the flow the other. And the break at 3.22 is a little rushed?

The passages that really rock hardest start at 5.25 until the acoustic outro; I hear the acoustic guitar slamming behind the killer lead building to a frenzied crescendo, you could really accentuate that with some white noise starting deep in the mix around 5.48 (prolly not your style though or you'da done it) Thanks for sharing.

Wireneck,

I really liked that tune, it reminded me of Opeth. Everything sounds really good. I didn't notice any out of place elements that tend to mar home recordings. It has good spacing, but if you get the chance try to shift the left and right guitars further to the outside. It may add to the feeling.
I also have a suggestion for the drums. You seem pretty good at programming, so if you have the money try to get BFD. I used to use DFH, but was dissapointed in the lack of good dynamic samples, and it was 10 times easier just to mic my kit. I tried out BFD at a local studio and it sounded almost as good as a real kit, cymbals and all. I still mic up for bands and the like, but for personal projects I use BFD and no one can tell the difference.
And if you can't get BFD, I've found shifting the dynamics slightly on successive hits adds to the realism greatly. For example, if you have a steady 8 beat hi-hat rhythm, make every hit within 30 of max dynamics. This should trigger a different sample each hit, which avoids the programmed feel of cymbals and rolls.
Good luck with music, you sound great.

Ben.

good tune Wire.. excellent guitar playing..

the hats ride basically all the cymbals are low.. it's sounds like someone rolled off the high end on this.. it's missing some high end crispness.. not mid highs either.. mainly where the cymbals should be.. the guitars sound good but mid rangey and also sound like the high end was cut on them.. maybe you're using very bright monitors or something.. I know that DFH2 sounds better than this crispness wise so maybe you intentionally darkened the mix.. needs some tweaks.. maybe a multi band compressor on the acoustic to tame the squeaks and bring the rest of it out a little more..

either way impressive tune!

Great song and great sounds throughout. I'm a big fan of your stuff. Excellent guitar tones. I don't think it would be detrimental at all to bring up the overheads a little on this. That's the only thing I'd like to hear more of.

Great work, man.

Digital Smigital Thank you for the support. As it stands right now, we have 6-7 movements that are in progress. I will gladly send you a cd or put the songs up for your Ipod when they are ready.

Fireal402 thanks for the info. The other guitarist does all of the programming. I just handle the mixing/tracking portion (or lack of haha). I did select the sounds/edit some velocities etc. I will have to take a look at BFD.
We now have a live drummer so its looking like we will probably take all of these tracks into a real studio with the real drummer once we have worked them out as tight as possible.
Thanks for listening.

B.Sabbath I wish I could make excuses for the "Darkness" of the mix lol. I am inclined to think that its my Event 20/20s fault but more than likely its my ears. I know one thing, I am consistent. I definitely need to check into this because I know I have gotten comments along the same lines from you on quite a few other mixes.

I know that DFH2 sounds better than this crispness wise

hmmm I am certain it can be done but the samples themselves are very raw/un-processed. I guess its all up to the skills of the user.

As always, thank you for listening

MetalHead28 thanks for the positive comments.

updateI brought the Overheads up as a few people suggested. I guess that one slipped by me.

Nice work!....Thoroughly enjoyed my listen, I listened a few times....I am a big fan of instrumentals, especially in this vein!

I loved the playing and in particular at the 5:20 mark!.........Very Nice!

I am going to refrain from getting into the mix too much: Possibly the acoustic guitar could be brightened up and made a little more pristine, but hey............Nice Work!

Gorty :)

wireneck, I was checking out your stuff - very nice, man!
Kinda has an Opeth vibe to it, which I mean in a very complimentary way (since I think they kick ass)

good stuff man!

P.S, let me know when you have a CD ready, I would buy one

GortyThanks for the listen and comments.

Amra thanks for listening. Opeth is definitely an influence/inspiration. I will let you know through PM once we have something available.
