I agree with the statement above, that...
it's neither mellow, nor yellow!
E'thing seems wall-of-sound-ish, overall, but I find that's what I think about most modern home recording I hear nowadays. I'm not in step with all the compression of e'thing in the mix that people do these days. Lots of things in the home recording realm sound too DI and overcompressed to my ears.
However, it was a decent recording. I like some of the drum rolls that were really tasteful. The energy is really good and the playing is fine. It's a real jam-band-type takeoff on the song. You're right, it's originally one of the mellowest, yellowist take-it-easy-kick-back-hippy anthems of all time.
I think on vocals you've resigned yourself to 'aw fuck I can't sing' way of doing things. I think your delivery is good, your energy is great but you gotta work on pitch. Sometimes I think ur singing right off the page. I like your stuff, though, so don't get me wrong. I think you should make a concerted effort to sing
'like a singer' would. I know the pomp and circumstance of really singing out can be embarassing, or feel phony, but we have to do it anyway. All tracks are not lacking except your vocal lines, which I think could improve.
I sometimes marvel at the sound of some recordings (in a good way of being entertained), while they simultaneously grate on my ears a bit and produce listening fatigue in a relatively short time.
The short story of the mix for me is that I'd like to hear less DI tracks & less compression. That's just me, though, and probably isn't relevant to what anyone else wants to hear.
I don't usually crit mixes, 'cept on the stuff I really like, and I like all your stuff. If you work on really polishing your vocals with pitch and all that, and you'd be unstoppable!
I'm impressed with your body of work, & your mixes do sound good. I'm impressed with anyone who can bang out tunes as fast as u guyz do.
