I am working on a recording project and I wanted to know if there are any certain units that can simulate a mellotron sound. Or maybe if there's a DX plug that would work also.

I'm not looking to get the same exact sound out of it as a real mellotron, just trying to get a bit close.

I have the Mike Pinder CD that regebro mentioned above. It's very good.
If you're looking for a plug-in, there's the M-Tron which is only $70. However it's a VST plug-in so you have to find out if it can work with some kind of VST->DX adapter. I haven't listened to it so I have no idea how good it is.
Also, there are a couple of old keyboard modules by Emu called Vintage Keys and Vintage Keys Plus. These have a few of the most popular Mellotron sounds. You may be able to find one used on ebay for around $250-$300 or so.
