Everything on youtube is garbage. If you or anyone else happens to think my drums sound okay, then that's all the proof you need that the CAD Pros will be serviceable. Best ever? No way. Good enough for some home recorder shmoe and demos? Most definitely. And even if you hate my drums, it's probably not the mics. I tune em to tones that I like, and mix em the way I want, and not everyone feels the same way. A lot of people hate my drums because they hate me and they think it hurts my feelings. They're my favorite.
Anyway, any quality name-brand kit is gonna be fine if you're on a budget and don't have any specific drum needs. Tama, Pearl, Yamaha, Ludwig, Mapex, whatever. They're all good. Even their cheaper series are plenty good enough for recording. The heads you choose, how you tune them, and your playing skill is gonna dictate the sound you get way more than the name on the front kick head. But for a grand, you're probably gonna need to go used all the way. Cymbals alone can eat into a thousand bucks really quickly. A decent double pedal is easily 200 bucks by itself. Scour ebay and craigslist for complete kits with cymbals that interest you.
