Hello everyone.

Steven

anyone?

Seems to be a difficult one to find any info on....

That's because they haven't made them for (who knows...).

It's just a compressor though - You set the attack and release the way you want them (this one has an "auto" function if you want), set the ratio the way you want it to react and the threshold down where you need it to work.

As you'd probably expect, no one can just "tell you" how to set those controls - It needs to be done live on that system.

If you're just looking to "whack 'em" pretty good, set the threshold at around 4:1, use the "auto" and "interactive" settings for the knee and the A&R, then have someone scream into it continuously while bringing the threshold down to a point where you're seeing several (6?) dB of gain reduction.

Or, you can use a ratio of 1.1 or 1.5:1 with a much lower threshold and ride the complete dynamic range of almost anyone.

Or, you can use a ratio of around 6 or 8:1 and severely limit the dynamic range of the loudest people.

Or, Or, Or...

How about starting with a 1:1 ratio and threshold set at 0, then work it from there?

:p

Hi,

Turn off expander/gate
set threshold to 0
Ratio 2.5
Select Auto (attack, release).
Output 0
Peak limiter off

With signal connected, turn the threshold anti clockwise until you get gain reduction on the loud passages of vocal. Turn up the output to restore lost signal level.

From this point on experiment with threshold, ratios between 2 and 4, output levels. Leave attack and release in auto.

This is just a starting point, different vocalists with different delivery require different approaches to compression, as does styles of music.

Cheers

Alan.

compressor settings

Thank you Alan! Appreciate the info. Will give me a good baseline.

yes, always keep the peak limiter off. it's garbage, a diode clipping circuit of the worst kind possible. just say no.

the rest of the compressor is excellent though, especially if you keep the levels going in nice and high (+4 is definitely better than -10 with these babies).

the person who gave a few simple settings above just summarized compressor use better than most people I've ever read from on this or any other forum.... nice work!)

cheers,
Don
