HI to everyone,

I have just bought a 2nd hand Yamaha MD 8 since i heard so much about it, and everything went well for a week or so till I started to receive an Error 06 message while i tried or at the end of a recoding. This happens with both mini discs and mini disc data. Is anyone familiar with this kind of message? The guy i bought it from had changed the laser so i have the receipt for it, could it be that??
Thanks,
pier

Yo Pier:

Just checked in my MD8 manual and cannot find a reference to the error number you are getting.

I have had one or two "disc error" messages since I've had my unit; however, with a touch of the vacuum cleaner on the disc and gently on the opening where the disc goes, Voila, no more problemas.

You might try that. Trouble with used gear is you don't know if any beer has been spilled on the unit.

Otherwise, get Yamaha on the net and ask their techies what your error number means.

Merry Christmas

Any error that just Error 00 thru Error 99 are Fatal Errors, and your supposed to contact your Yamaha Dealer. Some of the Yamaha electronics have a tamper switch inside that just needs reset by the factory, even some of the older products had a chip that shut itself down so it would have to go back to the factory for regular sheduled maintenance for their purposes, It happened to a friend of mine...Sorry, Im sure my MD8 day of reconing is coming!

Peace,
Dennis

According to the Yamaha.com site, error code 06 is a "focus error." Could be the laser was not properly mounted and has shifted. Could even be a speck of dust sitting on the laser or laser focus lens. Try the vacuum method first. Maybe it could pull the dust out. Next I would find out who installed the laser and talk to them. If you go to the Yamaha.com service and support area you can send an email describing your problem. They were very helpful with a friend of mine several weeks ago.

Good Luck

Yeah, that error 06 is a pain. I bought a brand new MD8 from Mars Music and 5 minutes outta the box I was getting that ERROR too. It would lock up on me after 3 failed attempts to write the TOC. Anyway I took it back, then ordered one from those MusiciansFriend.com people. They said I was getting a BRAND NEW unit, but when it arrived, I noticed the box had been opened and that EJECT button was very CROOKED (like the fine folks at musiciansfriend I guess). Anyway, I called Yamaha and they said that I probably got sold a BLEM or a B stock and that it was NOT normal to have a crooked wobbly button. I really don't know what to do at this point. I have checked out the unit and done several tests, with no errors this time (same DATA DISCS as the 1st unit). I don't know if I should risk sending this back to them, and demand they send me a NEW one (which might be defective like the new one from Mars), OR just keep this one that at least works, and maybe call musiciansfriend and negotiate a lower price since I was obviously sent an Open Box Blem, Thanks for any advice. Yo Rod:

I would call MF and get a return number and send the unit back. You may lose a few bucks for "restocking," which is fairly common among most vendors.

Then, I'd call Full Compass, after you get your refund from MF, and order a NEW UNIT. B-stock is "bumped" stock.

I just got a new Yam DAW2816 from Full Compass and it was BRAND NEW. I have returned merchandise to Full Compass and have had no trouble.

When you call Full Compass, ask for Heather Paske and mention my name, Ben. It won't get you the box any cheaper but she is a nice gal to work with.

Thanks for the reply. Did you buy your MD8 from Full Compass Ben? I take it yours does not have a crooked eject button then?
Also, I noticed on Full Compass' web site they show a Silver MD8. Mine is a black one. Do they sell both? I wonder what they are charging for their MD8 at the moment? Guess I'll have to call Monday to find out huh? (no prices on their site.... )
Thanks again!

I got a B-Stock from American Musical.com, and the manual had notes written in it from whom ever had it before. The Eject button isnt very sturdy, not crooked mind you but very wobly. I have only experienced disk errors from running it too long in a hot environment. It frustrates me that I thought $1059 was a good deal when I bought it, they were still around $1300 brand new at that time, 3 months later the bottom drops out because of the AW4416's and boom, I see close out prices for around $699 to $899. Oh well, maybe next year with I can capitalize on the ADAT dilemma. My wife wants to remodel our 2nd family room, which means opportunity to consume 1/2 of the garage for control room expansion and a vocal and drum booth...Im already excited and its a year away....

Peace,
Dennis
