MD 4 thru stereo help wanted

hi,

i have a Panasonic SJ-MR220 minidisc recorder that has a line in/mic in/headphone jacks and want to know how do i plug it into my stereo in order for me to play back the minidisc thru my stereo? Or how do I hook it up so I can play it thru my computer and be able to burn copies? Please help. I'm new to all of this. Much appreciated.

I used to use an MD8; it still sits in my studio -- looks cool.

You should have two RCA stereo outs on the back of your unit, if it is similar to mine. I just looked at my MD8 and it also has RCA monitor outs.

From your stereo outs RCA, you run the other end of the RCA cables into your stereo amplifier and then you turn up the volume on your speakers and, Voila, you should be able to hear what you have recorded before you mix it to something, like a CD or cassette.

If you don't have any stereo RCA outs, which is kind of hard to believe, then there should be an audio patch plug of some kind. Get those Panasonic folks on line and ask if your manual doesn't help.

My minidisc only has line in, mic in and headphone inputs, no two stereo outputs! Unless you mean my stereo which does have two RCA output jacks...If I read your reply right it would mean I need to plug my RCA outputs into my stereo and the other single end into my line in of my minidisc. is this right?

If you have a 4 track MD, I can't figure why you don't have any outs.

The "outs" if you had them, would patch into your RCA CD patch, or phono patch -- depends on your amp. I use an integrated amp by Yamaha and it can handle all kinds of RCA ins.

But, maybe I just don't know your gear very well. If you have an MD recorder, you should have a means to hear what you record via a patch of some sort.

I think you're confused with type of minidisc recorder I have, it's not a 4-track recorder. It's one of those portable walkman type players/recorders...i hope you know what I mean...
 
This is going to depend on your stereo. Does it have a line in? If so you can go MD headphone -----> line in
If not you'll have to use a Digital to Analog converter (like the cd tape thing you use in a car) or a radio transmitter (best buy $20). Or if you ave RCA in's on your stereo buy a male 1/8th" to Male RCA cable at radio shack.

As far as getting it onto your computer thats a different beast. The microphone input on your computer sucks, but if you dont have a line in or anything else it's all you got. Turn off the mic boost in volume control and use a program like audacity to record. You can do noise reduction with audacity and it;s free.

If you can afford a standalone cd burner I suggest recording a cd from the MD and then ripping it onto your computer.
Or you can buy a soundcard with a decent input

I want to thank both Nilbog and Green Hornet for your help. I have indeed purchased the xitel product and all's working great now. Thank you for your help.

One last question, what's the best format to save my recorded files I've recorded onto my harddrive from my MD player? And how do I then transfer those so I can burn it off onto a CD? Sorry for the extra questions...
