McCartney/Wings/Nashville session circa 1974

this is one of my favorite things about analog recording--- it's timeless.

i was hired to do the analog to digital transfer yesterday from the McCartney/Wings Nashville sessions that were recorded in 1974 on 2" 16 track. the original tracking engineer (Ernie Winfrey) was there to tell stories and pull up some great ruff mixes. totally cool.

plus, the stuff was cut at a studio called The Sound Shop on a MCI 416 console and an MCI JH16 tape machine...i have a MCI 428 (the next version after the 416) and a MCI JH24 (the next version after the JH16)

it sounded awesome! we transfered two reels of master takes, and two out take reels that had some pretty cool jams on them. i put some pics and a video on my studio's Facebook page:

i also convinced Ernie to come back with the tapes for a laid back evening where i can invite a bunch of folks to experience what i did; hear the tracks, the stories and ask questions. i'll post an event on the Facebook page- shooting for august and am going to work it through the Nashville AES chapter. this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity - so keep tabs on '79 to see when it's going to happen.

When I get a little more time I'm going to check out those vids. That's way cool Chris. The juniors farm vocal, that wasn't the one used in the original release was it?

thanks! i can't say for sure if that was the vox used in the release (i didn't mix it! LOL) i know the reels were taken back across the pond for mixing; they may have re-cut the vox....not sure though.
 
It's great to hear of someone out of Nashville that was left unscathed from the devastating flood waters.

yes, i was very fortunate not to have any damage at all from the flood.

i will try to remember to post a reminder of the event; the best thing to do is to "like" '79 on facebook so you'll be in the loop.

hmm...i think a webcast would be a good idea for this event....

Chris did a bounce to digital for me a while back of an old Billy Mure ("The Supersonic Guitar Man") 16 track tape. All went well and Billy (age 94) and I are still playing with the project when time permits. I really feel that since he did this project for me that he should send me copies of the McCartney tracks. ;)

richard! that also one of the coolest transfers i ever did! i tell that story all the time about billy wanted to do some more overdubs at the age of 94!

sorry- i don't have copies of the mccartney stuff! ;)

I had a chance to look at your site and really like the video. Very cool.

What was the digital gear/formats used for the transfers?

He's now 94 and still playing every Sunday night (in fact he had 3 gigs this week). Billy has been making his living as a musician since the age of 17 (1932). He became a very busy studio guitar player in the '50's and '60's. He played on a minimum of 15 number one songs in that time period. He was known as "The Supersonic Guitar Man" on his own albums released around the same time. http://www.rockabilly.nl/references/messages/billy_mure.htm I met him about 4 years ago and he is a good friend who stops by my house every Monday evening while his "girlfriend" goes to a meeting. He stopped by today with an old master tape of a song he recorded in about 1965 or so. I dubbed it down into the computer and we are going to be playing with it this Monday evening. I hope to do a video telling his life story in the near future.

What a great post and video. As a diehard Macca fan, especially of the Wings era, seeing the cats he worked with in Nashville rolling the original tapes of the sessions was unreal! Thanks brother...
