Any knowledge of these tapes? I've got access to used tape of this type.
AFAIK Maxell don't have shedding issues but is it +3, +6 or +9 tapes? I'm trying to avoid +9 tapes as I like slight saturation and our machine don't handle 3M 996 too well - however no problems with SM900.

UD50-10R is good mastering tape on par with UD 35-90, but it is 1.5 mil thickness. Its in the +3 class like Ampex Quantegy 406.

UD50-10R stands for Ultra Dynamic 50 micron thickness on 10-inch Reel. It will not have sticky-shed. it came in 1/4" and 1/2" widths.

Thanks Beck!

1.5 mil thickness is the same as SM911 and 456 right?

+3 - how nice, I've been looking for that for ages.

Yes, 1.5 mil is the base thickness of SM911 and 456. After backcoating and oxide are added the total thickness is closer to 2 mil. Maxell used the total thickness in their model numbers. For example, UD 35-90 is 35 Micron thickness and 90 minute play time at 7.5 ips both directions. The base film for 35-90 is 1 mil, but the total thickness is about 1.4 mil (35 microns). 50 microns is roughly 1.9 mil.

Maxell reel-to-reel tape is good stuff. I have UD 35-7 from the 1970's and its about the same as UD 35-90 and LN 35-90. They only changed how they named the tape. The older tape has the reel size in the model number, while the new tape from late 70's and 80's has the play time in minutes. It's all about the same though.
