Max Wall Alternatives

Will something like the Max Wall do any good for improving monitoring in a small space? I've been thinking about making the 703 broad band absorbers but I have either doors or built in bookshelves in almost all the corners in the room and the Max Wall seems like the perfect solution. I'm sure it costs an arm and a leg though so are there any DIY alternatives? I'm looking for something relatively light that will improve monitoring.

You could cobble together some fabric wrapped rigid fiberglass panels, then stick them on stands, and get decent results.

If you're looking for a commercial alternative that works better than foam, have a look at my company's MiniTraps. These can be easily mounted on microphone stands to create a very absorbent wall that surrounds you when mixing. Or just put the stands close to the walls and in the corners, which is a better way to place acoustic treatment in most rooms anyway. This way you can still get them in the corners, but move them out of the way when you're not mixing.

Go to www.realtraps.com and you'll see some photos showing some of our traps mounted on stands.

I really can't afford those right now. If I wrap the fiberglass panels in fabric then put foam wedges or something on them would that get me better results?
 
There wouldn't really be any point in putting the foam on top of the fiberglass. Everything the foam does fiberglass does better.

That's okay. Of course, MicroTraps are even cheaper than the Max Wall panels you mentioned originally.

Oh I wasn't getting the Max Wall either. I was just interested in the concept. It seemed like a good solution for my situation, so I wanted to make a bootleg version. I've heard nothing but great things about ur MicroTraps and you'll definately get my business in the future. Thanks for your help Ethan and Tex.

One more question. Would there be an advantage to having multiple layers of fiberglass? If I glued two peices together so that the panel is double thick would I get better results?

That will not increase the absorption at mid and high frequncies, but it will help at low frequencies. As absorber panels are made thicker, what really happens is their absorption extends to lower frequencies.

Why don't you just find a used office furniture/supplies store and buy some office partitions (like what they use for cubicles)? Then you can add a little Auralex foam to it.
