I read a thread mentioning that increasing your buffer size on your hardware will help relieve CPU load. I'm running Audition 1.5 and getting stuttering and crackling on playback. CPU usage is at 100%. What size should I increase it to?

AMD AThlonXP 2600.
768 ddr 2100, 133 Mhz FSB
250 GB 7200RPM HDD

Also if my HDD isn't set as DMA why should that matter, and how do I change it?

i belive the buffer size by defualt is 256, try to increse it by 50, and check the sound. if it still crackles...increase it by another 50, and check it again. keep doing so untill the sound is clear.

you might want to use an ASIO driver too. Go to www.asio4all.com
its a free asio driver that works well with most applications. I have one, and with my delta 66, i have a low latency of 2.7 milliseconds......pop/crackle free!

DMA is fine, but for the lowest latencys....ASIO is best. you should expect around 5-7ms of latency with DMA, but with ASIO, it gets it lower, and more stable for windows based PC systems.

also, the more effects you run into your effects bins on your recording software, the more strain it has on your CPU usage. The higher the CPU usage......also youll get pops and clicks in your playbacks. Only use effects that you must use........and ditch the ones that you can live without.

I use an audiophile 2496..i set my DMA buffer size to 256 samples. it runs pretty smoothly. havent had any problems as of yet.

I use Audition

Audition 1.5 doesn't support ASIO. It only supports WDM. Those are only drivers to run your hardware and software right? I thought DMA was some sort of standard on a HDD?

If Audition doesn"t use ASIO then you might run into Latency Issues as every time I try to record with WDM I get Bad Latency Issues....

You might switch recording software to a free one Like Krystal or Audiacy or if you really want It I have a Copy of "Abelton Live (Lite)" that came with my Delta 44 that I aint useing, if you want it let me know and I"ll mail it to you...

Cheers

I have aduacity, I use it to capture quick mixes out of my digi recorder sometimes. But I have been trying to start recording and mixing all on the PC using audition. Unfortunately as I found out, Audition 1.5 doesn't support ASIO and also has some other irritating issues. So I DLed the demo for AA 2 which supports ASIO and fixes some other issues, but guess what? AA 2.0 won't install on an AMD 2600+ processor, it doesn't support SSE2, whatever that is. I might buy a new PC, but I don' really have cash to spare. I'm kind of stuck right now.

Al New Adobe Software will only Run on a CPU that Supports SSE2 (Streaming Simd Extentions 2) which is on all Intel processors and Athlon 64 CPU"s have but not the Athlon XP.....

You can easilly and Cheaply Upgrade your PC to a Intel Model with SSE2 and SSE3...There are deals on at TigerDirect right now were you can Buy an Intel Celeron D 3.06ghz (With the 256kb of L2 Cache) CPU and a Intel Motherboard for about $75....

The newer Celerons are Much faster than the Older Models were because they have doubled the L2 cache from earlier models and they have a faster Buss speed and have the new SSE3 Instruction set...

You can also get a Athlon 64 3200+ CPU and a Socket 754 Mobo for about $150 which supports SSE2 and for a few bucks more you can get it in the Socket 939 Package which will allow you many years of Future upgradeing ....

Doing this will be a Lot cheaper that Buying a New PC and it is Rather easy to Install a New Mobo/CPU and you can sell you old one and Make back a Big chunk of the cash you spent on Upgradeing.....

Cheers

I also will have to reinstall winodws

plus that MoBo is probably an SATA HDD version correct? I know you can still hook up IDE's, but the main HDD has to be SATA I think. Is that the case or no?
