Naiant - audio Technica

daveblue222,

The Naiant omnis are nice and very affordable. If you like cardiods try the Audio Technica Pro 37 (or Pro 37r, same mic). These mics have excellent high end detail. I got mine used for around $100 each.

In between these in price is the MXL 603, another nice mic that's not too expensive.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

The budget is very low - personally I would look at the Sontronics STC-1S as they are including free-of-charge the omni and hyper-cardioid heads with the kit at the moment, as well as the standard cardioid heads.

That's a lot of mic. for the money and will give you a lot of flexibility for the future.

Does it have to be a matched pair for that usage? Matched pairs are more or less for stereo images. One mic per ear and orientated to mimic the directionality and/or timing difference between those ears. Guitar is normally mic'd with one near the sound hole, one near the frets. Using an LDC and SDC is quite common depending on what traits one wants to emphasize. The boom of the hole, or the twang of the frets.

L130 really isn't much at all. If you truly want a matched pair, that's L65 PER MIC. You probably want SM81's ($350 USD per mic), but can only get something like Behringer C2's for that cash. Baring used prices and other things.

Avenson STO-2's are like $225 per mic.
Rode NT5's in that $200+/- range as well, per mic.
Oktava MK-012's

and others, but most of which exceed that budget. Lots of cheap field recorders and small electret mics, but not exactly a sound quality worth investing in IMO. The Zoom H1 being the better value near that price point at the moment.

i'ld look at the audiotechnicas...those pro 37's that were mentioned are a real good mic for the dough... and A-T's quality controll is real high so if the serials are close they'll basicly be matched ...

Fwiw....

"In between these in price is the MXL 603, another nice mic that's not too expensive." From Larry

I started out with a pair of these, I am basically a noob.....I hated them. Not a mic I would recommend, people with more knowledge and finesse than me can prolly work them like an artists brush, but for a noob(not unlike myself:cool:), I found them to be almost unusable.

Just my .02.
