Masterlink Hard Drive

Hey Everyone,
I know that opening the case of the Masterlink voids the warranty, but theoretically, is there any way to upgrade the internal hard drive in this thing? Would there be any harm in trying to mount the drive on my PC, and then copying whatever files exist on the drive to my new HD and then installing that one? Just an idea...

I've heard of some people trying - in theory, there should be a problem.... you would have to re-install the version software to format the drive....

Try it and let us know! ;)

Are you happy with your masterlink

I wish I could answer your question but I can't. However could you tell me if your happy with you Masterlink and do you feel your able to get Mastering House quality from this machine. Thanks

If you do upgrade the hard drive, please keep us advised of the problems and pitfalls involved. Marroug's post on the other site was like a real condensed summary of his method. Being an ultra newbie, I'm not sure I could duplicate his procedure as he described it.

Well, he used a 20GB HD, I'm gonna go for a 40GB seeing as how they're so cheap!! :) What I like about this HD swap is that the OS is contained on the HD. So theoretically, if it doesn't work, I should be able to place the old HD back into the system, and everything will work just as it did before...

On the MusicPlayer forums, someone in George Massenburg's forum said that he had heard directly from the designer of the Masterlink that the largest drive size it would support was 32Gb. So don't be overly surprised if you put in a larger drive, but only get 32 out of it.

The other thing that was noted over there was that speed is a nonissue, and that the ultrafast drives can actually be a liability: a 10K rpm drive is probably significantly faster than you really need for the job, and will dissipate more heat inside the box. Heat is the enemy of these things, so you might end up with some flakey behaviors if you go with an overly-speedy drive. One poster in that thread said that he needed to leave the lid off of his to get reliable operation after he upgraded the drive- but that's the only case of that I've heard of. Several people over there have upgraded with ultracheap 5400 rpm drives, and had excellent luck.

I have two Masterlinks, and I'm planning on doing this upgrade in the next few weeks myself. I'll let you know how it goes: the box is one of my favorite pieces of hardware...
 
I'm gonna pick up a Hard Drive tonight and give it a shot..... I'm gonna look for a 5400rpm 20-35GB hard drive at Fry's.

I'll let you know what happens....
