Hello,

I just mastered a track and tried something for the first time. I'm not sure of the results.

The track registered a bit louder in the left channel so I used the "balance" function in my mastering software to even the channels. The resulting wave looks skewed/flattened in the upper half of the waveform.

First should I be worried by a little imbalance in my final mixes? Secondly why does my waveform appear "shaved" and how does this differ from DC Offset?

Thanks,
Rusty K

Hi!

The waveform is not clipped. I checked the wave "stats" with my multitrack software and there is no clip, there is also neglidgeable
DC offset. As far as I can hear the track sounds fine.

My assumption is that adjusting for L/R "balance" in this particular mix was not necessary but I'm still wondering about the appearance of the waveform after this mastering process.

wettke,

Yes I used compression as well as limiting but I use these all the time and I don't get a waveform appearing like this one.

I had what seemed to be an odd similar thing happen on a track 'bounce' with an UltraFunk limiter on it. Top was clipped, but not the bottom. Normally I would use it real-time (on a snare or kick) so I wouldn't get to 'see' it working.
There's something about different types of harmonic distortion appear on one side, not the other too.
May or may not relate though.
