Anybody got any info for this? I already read this thread: http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=192285&highlight=Vinyl

I was looking for more specific info.

I haven't ever mastered for the purpose of pressing to vinyl. I've mixed tracks that ended up being pressed to vinyl, but never mastered for it.

I understand the RIAA curve has three distinct frequencies it deals with, 2122 Hz, 500 Hz, and 50 Hz. From what I understand, it's not as simple as placing a low pass filter on the EQ and being done with it.

I've read some articles on this in the past, that highlighted points on boosting the higher frequencies and cutting the lower frequencies (below 300hz) and killing everything below 50 hz. Is that a good starting point?

I found this online:

The RIAA reproduction curve:

P.S. I currently use Waves Platinum Plugs, and as far as I can remember, the Q-10 EQ Plugin doesn't have a preset that would help out in this... maybe I'm wrong? Any help there would be awesome as well.

"Mastering for vinyl" does not mean applying an equalization curve to your electronic copy of the recording, unless you are cutting the laquers on a lathe yourself. You just make you master sound how you want it and the MEs at the record plant will worry about the EQ curves.

The only person that masters for vinyl is the guy that cuts the disc. You can't do anything. The riaa curve is part of the encoding process, if you will, that happens when the lathe is cutting the master.

Things that you need to worry about are things like making sure your mix is mono compatable. Phase problems are much bigger problems on vinyl. Other than stuff like that, it's all up to the guy that runs the lathe.

yea just get your mix as good as it can sound, don't bother throwing limiters or anything on the final mix. keep it dynamic!

Ok, great info guys!

I really appreciate it.
