I'm starting an NYU non-profit/student-run record label to release my peer's music. Our first release will be a compilation CD of 15-20 songs to be released late this year. For those bands without already-recorded material, we've had student engineers volunteer their time and effort. I understand the utter importance of the mastering process in releasing a cohesive and professional-grade album, especially in our case, in which the songs vary greatly in sonic quality and overall sound. Now our budget is considerably small -- grants are pretty tight these days. But I need professional mastering. So how much should I expect to pay? Who's good in the New York Area? AND do you think anyone would be willing to give us a discount? If this release is a success (and it most definately will be), we'll be sending them a fair amount of business in the future.
