I'm starting an NYU non-profit/student-run record label to release my peer's music. Our first release will be a compilation CD of 15-20 songs to be released late this year. For those bands without already-recorded material, we've had student engineers volunteer their time and effort. I understand the utter importance of the mastering process in releasing a cohesive and professional-grade album, especially in our case, in which the songs vary greatly in sonic quality and overall sound. Now our budget is considerably small -- grants are pretty tight these days. But I need professional mastering. So how much should I expect to pay? Who's good in the New York Area? AND do you think anyone would be willing to give us a discount? If this release is a success (and it most definately will be), we'll be sending them a fair amount of business in the future.

Mastering help

hi
I have been mastering for the last 6 years for a living. I doubt that you will get your mastering done for free as most mastering engieners have spent a lot of time and money on there training training and quals. I usually charge per job or by the hour whatever seems more appropriate, if you can prove that you a non profit organisation well see what we can do. I do alot of work over the net via private ftp and is deleivered back the same way or by post. As you have recognised mastering is so important for the final product. Drop me a mail at
Altitude@ihug.co.nz we might be able to work something out and send me a sample song via the net ill master up for you, giving you an idea, if you run a private ftp ill download it from you
( quite a few studios do that, it makes things really fast and easy for you). Or jsut send it by post.
Talk to you soon
