There is no way for the studio the track was recorded and mixed in to be able to hear any sonic shortcomings.

That's simply not true.

I hear plenty of sonic shortcomings in stuff recorded and mixed at my place.

I just thought it would be great if there was an example somewhere online where you could hear a mixdown - dry.
Then with cheap mastering (home or pro).
Then with good pro mastering.

I dont think the Pros would be a problem as far as who would volunteer ( Skillwise I mean). Another set of questions would be:

1. Which non-pros from the forum would be chosen?
2. What type of non-pro environment would the NP be mastering in? ie monitors, room treaatments, etc
3. What type of music would be mastered. ( I vote Hip Hop ) wouldn't have to be too concerned with dynamics. LOL
4. I would prefer straight hardware vs Plugin processing. No analog if possible. makes it a little more even

It should start with figuring out with of the non-pro guys are up to par enough to chalenge the Pros. maybe a non-pro contest.

5. The judges should be a equally amount of nonpros to pros with a blind listening test. Oh, in a non-controlled environment.

6. If there isn't a huge difference in sound quality,, the non-pro wins . LOL

7. If there is a Huge difference in sound quality, the better masterer wins.

Are you up for this Enforcer{EMC}?

Someone provides a homie a data CD with 3 songs totally unmastered to Enforcer and send me one and Bruce(Blue bear) one, three guys takes a shot, at 3 different pairs of ear, 3 different sets of systems etc.... and then we post the mastering jobs. We have done this before, But I think its would be a great lesson. I got dialup so Id have mail the disc to someone.

The real trick will be for some one to pick out not only who mastered what, but what program was used.

Sound like a fun thing to do?

Exactly Bruce. Your new place is the medium between pro(meaning its not a full fledge mastering facility) and home type environments. Your experience is also going to be a great help. We can't have complete newbies doing it because it stacks the cards in one direction. This will also help me prep for WOMP2 test a few things and have fun
It will help you acclimate to your new environment too.
Im up for it if we can get Enforcer to do it.

awesome, guys! That comparison will be very interesting and we all can learn a lot from it, I guess!

I think hip-hop songs would be a good choice. How about if we ask Lazi to provide songs? I think he makes good hip-hop.

As for the non-pros: it might be great to have somewhat experienced guys with different mastering tools, such as T-Racks, Ozone II, maybe Waves, and native plugins, so we can compare the results. Waddayathink?

As for the pros: since I am sure their results will be significantly better, their efforts will be rewarded with a free demonstration of their skills, good for their business ;-)

A mastering house has the monitoring signal chain/environment that actually allows the engineer to hear/analyze the mix COMPLETELY. This can't be overstated...
