I was thinking about getting a big ben, I have a HD set up-192 and a 96i/o. Would a this masterclock really improve the sound?

I would say yes it will. However, it may not be a drastic change since the digi converters and clocks in the HD stuff is actually pretty decent. Whether or not it is worth the upgrade is probably dependent on how hard earned that money is:)

Well I don't use any out board gear, except a mic pre. Would it still benefit?

There may be some improvement, but it would most likely be subtle. If it were me I'd probably just use the Digi's internal clock. I use the internal clock on my main converter (UA2192) and it sounds fine.

Recording at 44.1 kHz, your internal clock should be ok. There would be a subtle change at most. Save your money for something more important.

Even with just preamps as outboard, the Big Ben will probably improve the sound since it only affects digital equipment (your converters). Like I said though, it's value to you would be based on a fairly small improvement being compared to your monetary situation and other needs.

As for using the 2192's internal clock, the 2192 actually has an excellent clock in it that rivals the big ben in many peoples opinions, so i would not would not worry about that at all Sonic Albert:) Thats why I bought a 2192. I loved the converters, but the word clock distribution built into it is what made me decision for me.

As far as samplerates go, i was always under the impression that whether you were recording at 192 or at 44 khz that clocking was just as important.

I would get a rosetta 200.
That way you could have the same clock thats in the BB, and a nice two channel converter to run to your monitors (d/A)

Just an idea.

Anyways i use the big ben and pro tools as well, and id say its been one of the best upgrades ive ever got.

The imaging imporvement alone makes it easily worth the cash.

The Rosetta 200 and Rosetta 800 do not have the same clock as the Big Ben. The AD-16x and DA-16x are the other Apogee units having the same clock as the Big Ben.

HUH?

The apogee rep lied then.

HE was in the Clackamas GC the other day and i talked to him.

"The BB is the same clock we put in ALL of our new converter units."

My bad....i think?
