Anyone here willing to master my songs for dirt cheap and still do a good job?
The guy who's mastering my songs now is a former member of an 80's R&B band. He's making the music sound like that type of stuff. This would be no problem if it weren't for the fact that I do HIP-HOP music. My mixes are questionable (they suck). Anyone up to the challenge?

Well there are plenty of good ones around here but the problem is your "questionable mix". Typically ME's take a well mixed song and make it that much better, but they won't help your mix much if it's questionable. I think what you might need is a good mix engineer. Find one of those get your stuff remixed properly and you may not even want to fool around with mastering after that. Mastering is not a cure all problem for poor mixes.

You have three big problems on your hands:

1.) Mastering does not mean re-mixing. If you hired this guy to master your stuff and he is re-mixing it, he is way out of bounds. If you actually want him or someone else to re-mix it, then that's what you need to ask for, not "mastering", as that means something entirely different.

2.) If your mixes suck, they are not yet ready to be mastered. remixing is indeed in order first.

3.) Your belief that you can get quality work done on the cheap is going to lead you to a lot of misery unless you set the bar for "quality" rather low.

always on the money SSG :p ;)

I can dig it. Thanks. I think the problem is that i've been discouraged. For the past 3 years, I've been practicing, reading, and asking many questions about mixing. Then I started production work for a rap group. We're all on a budget so I decided to try to mix their songs myself. I figured it would help them save money and also, help me gain some experience with mixing.

I tried to mix this particular song 11 times before I felt comfortable with it. I sent it to the Mastering Engineer via email. He called and said the vocals were way to loud and the kick drum needed more bottom. I made the adjustments and sent the new mix to him. He called and said the new mix was perfect. PERFECT.

If the new mix was really perfect, why then does the master sound like shit?
Either the new mix was not perfect or the Mastering Engineer isn't any good.
Either way, something doesn't add up. I need to find a new ME. Make sense?

somewhere in the area or $30-$40 per song. But there are 3 albums. 1 has 14 songs and the other 2 will be between 10-14 each. If I can get a master for around $35, that would be great. That's what the other guy is charging. The price wouldn't be so bad if we were all satisfied with the finished product.

I'm trying to figure out this soundclick thing so I can upload the "questionable" mix.

I'd do it for $35 per song.

I too would be wiling to do it for $35-40/song

What format are the files?
what style?

email me with a rough file of a few songs so i can get a feel for it and i'll let you know what i can do mindovina@gmail.com

I record everything in Nuendo in 16 bit 44.1 khz. I usually convert to mp3 using Cool Edit Pro (since I don't know how to successfully convert to mp3 using Nuendo) then email a copy to the artists. If they feel good about the mix, I then send it to the mastering engineer (my older cousin). If I need to send a .wav file, I believe a GMail account is free. My girlfriend set one up for me. I can send wavs using GMail (and so can you). $35- $40 is an excellent price (please don't change your minds and aim higher). Just be honest enough to tell me beforehand, if the mix needs some adjustments. Trust me. My only job is this producing/ mixing thing. God willing, I'll learn how to do it correctly. If I need to fix anything, I have nothing but time. I'll fix it and re-send it.

BTW I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who selflessly, took the time and effort to assist those of us who are needy (for knowledge and expertise).
Thanks for not letting the ego get in the way and taking every possible opportunity to boast about how far-more advanced you are. Thanks for not looking down at newbies and klutzes like myself. Thanks for remembering that you were once a newbie, frustrated by lifes tendancy to constantly remind you of how great you could potentially be if you had been born as somebody else. Thanks for not insulting and belittling those with poor grammer, limited knowledge, and a limited wit. Thanks for not indulging in the fact that there are people (like me)with less knowledge than you that often make you feel more superior. THANKS A LOT to all the helpfullls.
