Just got back from a three hour afternoon guitar workshop with Martin Simpson; solo concert tonight.

Wow.

Ever hear a world class guitarist teach of the virtues of simplicity? Watch this guy's hands some time when he plays. Amazing tone comes out of that instrument and his hands hardly seem to move at all. The man is a master!

Now I have more work to do...:) :)

I had the same experience last week a Tony Rice / Peter Rowan show here in town. Tony Rice always seem so cool and calm while playing. His stlye is so smooth but at the same time he plays very fast and his licks are very technical and ALWAYS clean--The MASTER of flatpicking. It seems the harder the part is that he is playing the calmer he looks playing it. And Tone......wow. He was playing a Tony Rice signature Santa Cruz instead of his famed '38 C.F. Martin and the tone was still there. Yeah a great guitar is going to have great tone, but some much of how you play the instrument effects the tone also. Even if you guys aren't into Bluegrass you NEED to listen to Tony Rice play-----and sing for that matter. His voice is as tone rich and soulful as his playing. It is really unfortunate he has lost his voice, but the playing is still there.

How is he doing? I heard that he was working to get his voice back. The Martin (Clarence White's guitar - the holy grail of dreadnaughts) was damaged in a flood at Tony's house a few years ago, and I suspect that it doesn't go on the road anymore. (So he bops around with a $7,000.00 Santa Cruz instead...:D )

The Simpson concert was even better than the workshop - the guy really delivers the goods, loves what he does and just nails it. Ed Gerhard came up from New Hampshire to catch the show. It was a memorable evening, and now I have even more work to do on the guitar...
