This was posted on the rec.audio.pro and I am passing along the information.


"I just completed testing of all current Marshall Mics. The following were compared:
Drum Overheads-
MXL V77 vs. M147 (Neumann)
MXL2001 vs. AKG C414
MXL 2003 vs. AKG C414
MXL 2001 vs. MXL 2003
MXL 2001 vs. MXL V67
MXL 600 vs. KM184 (Neumann)
Kick Drum (1' out)-
MXL V77 vs. M147
Toms-
MXL 600 vs. KM184
Acoustic Guitar-
MXL 600 vs. KM184

Preamps used:
Overheads- Daking 52270
Kick- Avalon VT737sp
Toms- Oram MWS
Acoustic- D.W.Fearn

Equal lengths of Mogami Neglex Quad cable used throughout. Audio was recorded to Pro Tools 24 using Apogee AD 8000 converters.

The Marshalls performed suprisingly well. Anyone interested in a CD with detailed results email me for info.

Scott Dorsey from r.a.p. reminded me about this factor when he replied with this:


"The NT-1 has a Shanghai capsule instead of a Beijing capsule like the V-77 does.

However, what you have to remember is that production on ALL of these mikes has heavy unit-to-unit variation, so you can pick two mikes off the same assembly line that will sound completely different.

And as a result, we get into arguments in this group by people comparing different model microphones and coming to completely
different conclusions, and then fighting over it. This is a problem when there is such great variation in sound between two mikes of the same model.
