Has anyone used any of the marshal microphones? Specificly the mxl-v57m. Its a large diaphram mic tha sells for 99 bucks! Dose anyone know how it sounds?
This company is not related to marshal amps.

I don't have one,but what I have heard is they use the chinese capsule like so many of the new entry level big diaphragm condensors.
QC is reputed to be iffy. You might get a good one or not.
For not much more money you could get a AKG C-1000 (small diaphragm) or a Rode NT1(big) ,both of which are a huge jump up in quality.

I read an article saying they were extremely good value and had a great sound for the price. It was someones tip for a cheaper mic.

cheers
John

The V67 is a better mic from what I've heard. I don't think a Rode NT1 or a AKG C1000 are probably any better than the V67 or the V57 for that matter. Both the C1000 and NT1 suffer from a hyped high end that can make them very shrill and brittle.

So does the Manley Langevin Mic - at around 3 grand. The problem with chinese capsules has always been quality control. Your Rode NT1 uses a Chinese capsule, BTW. The Marshall V67G and the 603S are both excellent mics.

The C1000 is not even in the same city, let alonein the same ball park. The C1000, and the NT1 both have exagerated high end peaks, the two Marshalls I mentioned do not.

Pardon my naivete, but who is Harvey Gerst? Don't tell me we have a famous guy hanging out with us home recording bums... I think I'd die from excitement.

Sorry, Isaiah,

Afraid not. Nothing to die over. "Infamous" is a more apt description. And I was contributing to home recording when it was still in its infancy, so don't dis home recording.

I'm nobody special, just a 64 year old, owner/engineer of a small studio outside Krum, Texas ( which is near Denton, which is near Dallas and Fort Worth).

I'm proud of a few things I've done in my life, but any success I've had was due to dumb luck, rather than planning on my part.

As the police might say at the scene of a bad accident, "Nothing much to see here folks, move along, move along".

Wait a sec! You've worked with the Association, Buffalo Springfield and the Byrds? I love all 3 of those bands... you're significant enough to have my admiration. Wow.......... ::stares in humble awe::

I just happened to be lucky enough to be in a few right places at the right times during the 60s and 70s - that's all. For some reason (still unknown to me), some of these people liked me or thought I had some sort of talent or ability (that I haven't found yet).

The only positive outcome, other than being able to brag about who I knew (which nobody believes anyway), was that it made me realize that, by comparison, I wasn't a very good guitar player and made me put away the guitar - to the relief of thousands or people.

so Harvey...have you had any interest in linking up with some of the acts back in the 60's/70's with whom you have worked??.....can you bring Jimi back?? :-D

No, and I'm not anxious to see Jimi anytime soon either. :-( I still talk to McGuinn occasionally and Crosby now and then, and I've stayed in touch with the old Sweetwater bunch. I ran into Robbie Kreiger at a NAMM show a while back (the Doors movie had just come out), and we talked a bit. Last time I talked to Chris Hillman was when Desert Rose came to town.

I understand Gary Alexander is living in Austin, but I haven't been able to contact him. I did a folk album for Frank Hamilton on my record label, and Roger McGuinn gererously played on one of the tracks for his old guitar teacher. I'm still good friends with Rick Ruskin, but except for a few other people that were behind the scenes, I haven't kept up with the old crowd.

Of all of the people that died way too soon, I think I still miss Janis the most.

I don't mean to break up Harv's welcoming comittee here, but I'm really curious about the original subject of this thread, the Marshall MXL-V57M. It's about half the price of the V67 and if its anywhere near as good, its quite a deal. Anybody tried it yet? I checked your Marshall mic review again, Harvey, and I didn't see any mention of it. Do you think it would compare favorably to the V67?

Thanks

I don't know what the MXL-V57M is. The only mics they sent me were the mics showing on their website and in their catalog:
MXL 1000
MXL 2001-P
MXL 2003
The MXL V67G Gold Edition Condenser Microphone
The MXL-V77S Tube Condenser Microphone
MXL 600 Cardioid Instrument Microphone
MXL 603S Cardioid Instrument Microphone
and the MXL Fox Dynamic mic.

Cheap

Damn, for a hundred bux, shockmount INCLUDED, you almost can't go wrong. Hell, if its too bad, Antares will find a way to make it worth $100. I sent them an email, I'll let you know what they say when I hear back.

hey!

Hey I'm the guy who started this thread, all I want to know is if the mxl-v57m is a good mic and what is the frequency response? It seems to good to be true. But how can you go wrong at 99 bucks??????? I probably shouldn't say that.

MXL 2001

I just bought a MXL 2001 mic yesterday for 119 bucks! I was mainly looking for the AKG 3525 or Octava MC 319, but for that price, and since this is my first recording mic, What the HEESEY!!!
My 2 cents

Heres the scoop on the Mashall v57...

This is my reply from Marshall mics....
"Hi,
The V57 is a budget mic built exclusively for MARS Music. It is a dedicated
design and has no similarity (other than diaphragm) to any other MXL mic.
It's not on the web page because its not available to our general
population of dealers.
Wayne "

There you have it.
