Manley SLAM! A question about application

I have an opportunity to acquire a Manley SLAM! via trade. It would be well out of my budget otherwise, but in any event, I understand the SLAM comes in two versions one being the mastering version, without preamps, and with extra compression ratio settings. The one I might acquire is the regular SLAM. My question is this. Will I still be able to use the SLAM for mastering? I'm a bit confused as to how a fixed compression ratio affects the process. Does the SLAM allow one to blend in some of the uncompressed signal with the compressed signal? If not, my intuition is a fixed compression ratio would be very limiting (no pun intended). But clearly at their price point, there must be some utility to the comps even with their fixed ratio. How is the compression adjusted on the SLAM?
