Mandolin => Stereo MIC and Mini Condenser => MIC PRE's => USB => Cooledit Pro

Is there a piece of equipment that will allow me to record down this chain?

Mandolin => Stereo condenser MIC and a mini condenser MIC => MIC PRE's => USB => Cooledit Pro

I have some mics chosen that will serve to multitask down the road nicely as well. The key is how to get these three channels into the PC cleanly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You'll want an interface with at least 3 inputs (I don't know of one with 3, they do have them with 4 though).

Some interfaces will have preamps built in, if not, you'll need 4 channels of preamps and 4 inputs on your sound card.

A lot of FireWire interfaces have the preamps built in so that is not an issue. There are also some USB interfaces that have 4 channels I think. I'd still go with FireWire for anything, especially anything over 2.

You can get a PCI FireWire card from www.newegg.com (or even Wal-Mart) for pretty cheap. If you do, get one by Texas Instruments.
