This is a cover of Alice in Chain's "Man In The Box" recorded last year (2001). I just want some feedback, good or bad. This recording was done for fun and I'm still learning the recording process so I'm still new at this game but I hope you enjoy it.

Everything on this was done by my friend Matt. There are a bunch of screwups but every track was done in one take since we were limited in time.

MAn in the Box

Hey, indeed alice in chains rocks,
I don't want to be critical but most instruments were a bit off time, creating a really bizarre lurching effect to the song..
however, I think you've got a very nice voice - perhaps not meant to do llane stayley-ish work, but certainly effective in its own right..

can you tell me what your guitar set up is (type of guitar, amp/distortion etc.) and how you recorded it

thanks a whistle..

Dude... Major timing issues. The idea is there, but work on timing. Vocals, drums, guitar. Everyone needs to play together. The drummer and Bass need to set the groove, and everything else will fall into place. Right now, the drummer lags, and then the guitars give chase, but too late, the drummer is now trying to chase the chasing guitars. Argh.... a gooey mess of tempo is the result. Thanks for the post.

I agree with the "guey mess of tempo" comment. I don't know how you did the stuff, but it is really bad. Not the recording neccesarily, but all of the playing is hilarious. The singing is pretty funny too. I think the moral of this story is that you don't try and record stuff like that because it is not going to help you. I mean I can't even begin to listen to the mix or quality of recording becasue the playing in the song is so out of time. You probably think I am mean, but I just can't critique something like this. Start simple and when you get better then attempt harder songs. Maybe you should just try an acoustic guitar and then seperately record the vocals. That will be easier on the musician and on you to record. Drums are a beast of a thing to record. Ask anyone and see if they got a good drum sound there first time out. I know I didn't. My advice to you is to think smaller at this point.

If it were me playing the song, I'd feel a little bad, but I don't at all since its not me playing the song, its my friend Matt. He recorded all tracks track by track while I just sat back and watched. I've noticed that everything was off ever since we recorded it but since we didn't have alot of time, we couldn't work on it, he recorded every track in one take.

Lay all the bad stuff on me and even though the song itself is bad, try to look past that and tell me how I did mixing/quality wise.

The guitar tracks were recorded with an SM57 shoved against the grille of my big Crate amp. The guitar was a Fender Strat set on a Seymour Duncan JB pickup through an Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion pedal.

The bass (which in my opinion sound horrible) was DI'ed.

The drums were recorded with a Boss Dr. Rhythm DR-770 Drum machine set on "Standard" drum preset.

And the vocals were recorded with a Superlux CM-H8A and a Studio Projects C1 (for Doubled vocal parts and BG vocals).

It was recorded and mixed with the help of a Delta 44 soundcard, ART Mic Pre's, and Cool Edit Pro.

yikes!! and the singing... The gtr sound appeared to be ok, but after a couple of measures.....click it off...

Use the onboard sequencer in the Drum Machine.... None of this hand playing shit.... Thats Rough Bro :D

Hand playing works, if the guy can keep a rythm...:)

Honestly, the mix isn't too bad... I mean I've heard way worse, but I was starting to think that you are just playing a joke on us :)

I like the looseness of the singing....

I don't think anyone could play out of time like that on purpose.. I wonder if the computer was lagging some tracks or something...

I don't know man...I just don't know.... Does your friend smoke Crack?

(Kidding:D)

You know I listened to it some more and the drum sound isn't bad. I think your recording skillz are a lot better than his playing skillz. What I would really like for you to do is to get something together that is solid and put it up here. Maybe put together some nirvana song. That would be easier to play. I think you are getting a pretty good sound but my ears keep getting distracted. I have to say that I thought that post was just some kind of joke or something. But if you want us to criticize a song, then make sure it is a-lot more polished than that. Oh and maybe buy invest in a metronome!!

Recording wise and musicianship wise, i have to be one of the worst around here....but that performance was actually painful to listen to....i cant see how you could stand it recording it.......

from what i could stomach, you did an EXCELLENT job recording it.......

Vox, this isn't my drum machine so I haven't had time to learn it and if I didn't know how, my friend certainly wouldn't since he's never used it before.

I'm kind of wishing this was a joke, but he was dead serious about doing this and he absolutely loved the final product if you can believe that.

I've never had any problems with lagging on anyone of my other songs so it must be the playing.

He doesn't smoke crack but he smokes lots of weed, in fact he had some when he was over here.

Beezoboy, I would really like to put something good up but all the other stuff I have done are things I wrote and since they're not copyrighted, I get very paranoid. I have a metronome here and I asked him if he wanted a click track and he said he felt more comfortable without one.

Gidge, thanks for the comments. I try to make the best with what I got. I'm one of those guys who don't get much money but once they do, spend it on any gear I could.

Uh...Oh.... Someone snatched Beezoboy's internal rationalization mechanizim. =) It's like when you go to a bar and see a real manx of a girl and you attmept to convince yourself that she is Hot, cause she is eyballing you. That is where the internal rationalization mechanizm shuts down. Somone give him a swat...I can't reach him from here. Just kidding Beez.

Vox, if it worked that way, id post twice as much....:D   :p

Yeah, tell him to give another crack at it.

And whoever said to start off small (Acoustic Guitar and Just Vocals) might be a good idea..........

Then again, that is all I really have and I still sound like ass. ;)

that is bad...
no offense, but i had a few good laughs.

the playing sucks and the worst part by far is the singing! The vocalist(no offense...) sucks!

They arent singing,,they're mumbling. and a full octave lower than they should be at that...

the actuall recording and mixing is pretty good tho. its just that the source is waaaay off.

the funniest vocal part is at 1:20. it sounds like theyre dying...

whoever did the vocals let them know they really need to sing higher. I could tell many times that their voice fluctuated trying to get the pitch right. unless youre very talented at singing its hard to match pitch at low(in frequency, not volume) levels. the higher you go the easier it is to hit the notes. but, not everyone can do that,so....

Wow.....

... and I thought the singing was the best part... What does THAT say about the song....

I guess I must have had one too many beers when I made that post huh Fangar!

No really the drum sound is not that bad. I just feel bad for the guy. There is some real potential in the recording methods but the musician ruined it for him.

I think were all in tune enough that we don't hold Whyte Ice Responsible for the musicianship and the mix and recording is good enough, so I think his rep will be saved...:)

hopefully WhyteIce sees where we are coming from.....his skillz is the only thing that made it bearable enuff to get thru the whole thing.....but hey, im glad to see people being honest....if we cant be honest here, this wouldnt be a Clinic.....
