Male Vocal Mic (tube or not tube ;)

Hello,

This is my first post here.

I have a behringer b2 pro to a behringer bca-2000.
I record mainly male voice (mine) and acoustic guitars. The quality is “quite good”, but not
More than just right. (¿thin and trebly?)

I´m thinking of purchasing a better mic, and, of course, money matters. But I won´t
Buy anything that wouldn´t improve my recordings, so I´d like to know what´s your opinion about some mics I have in mind, or about another you could advise…

Mics are:

- Studio projects tb1
- Rode K2

Both are tube mics, but just because I´m after a warm and thick sound, so
Other suggestions would be welcome.

Maybe a “stairway to heaven” answer would be helpful (mic A under 400, mic B under 500, mic C under 600…)

...if a tube mic is what you want...go for something in the middle of the 2 you selected...the Studio Projects T3...used ones go regularly on eBay for around $250-300...better than the TB-1 and well within the class of the K2...I've had all 3, and the T3 is the "best buy" IMHO...;)

...from there you go to M-Audio Sputnick and Mojave (Royer) MA200...more dough, more juice...but the T3 is competitive all the way up the line...I'd go for a better pre before spending more than the cost of the T3 for a mic...

...best pro quality vocal recording setup for an untreated space...any good powerful single mic pre (Great River, Safe Sound, etc.) and a Shure SM7B...truly pro quality on a relative budget...(when you're ready to spend a bit more)...

Might I suggest steering away from LDC's altogether and looking at ribbon mics? If "thick" is what you're after, then ribbons are probably the ticket. Take a look at the Cascade Fat Head...it's a fantastic acoustic guitar mic, and if it's not quite sparkly enough on the high end, it takes EQ very well. If you must continue on the search for an LDC, then look at M-Audio's Sputnik as well. Nice mic, low price.

I´ll take a look to ribbons, too. Now I´m thinking that if I need a good preamp I need a better audio interface than the bca-2000, or a combo solution...

Unless you can improve your signal chain, I;d probably not pay a whole lot for a mic.

I think Weasel9992 has a good point: ribbons are thick sounding.
Also, a lot of people expect a tube mic or preamp to sound like something that it does not.

Here's two mics I would recommend based on your stated desire and considering what you'll be playing through:

Karma K6 (ribbon) - it is phantom powered so you don't need gobs of gain (and it sounds very good)

MXL V6 (used - $100 - $125 is a steal) - it's a lot like the V69ME, which I think is one of the more *toobey* sounding tube mics, maybe even warmer. There's one on eBay right now (I believe it is from a respected member of one of the forums):

...that same seller is selling one of the "holy grails" of prosumer audio, the coveted MXL V77 tube mic (discontinued for years)...I've owned and tracked with V77s over the past 7 years and there's no inexpensive mic that compares to the clean, silky sound of this amazing bargain mic...ask Harvey Gerst if you don't believe me...this mic is a definate "keeper" for any home recorder who wants to get accurate, true recordings...what goes in, is what comes out...;)
