I'm buying some mic cables now on line, and don't want to get the wrong cable, and I don't have any mics here in front of me... The back of the mics (ie SM58, and SP C1) need a male XLR chord or a female XLR chord to plug in? I'm asking this because in the case of the SM58 I'm looking for the XLR to the male 1/4".

So the chain would go... SM58--> Male XLR (or female, not sure)-->cable would be here--> 1/4" conector--> into PA input.

Am I making sense?

thanks!

Mics have male connectors, so you need a female plug. However having an XLR-1/4 cable is not necessarily a good thing; that would only plug into a low-gain line input into many mixers which is not what you want.

you're using a 1/2" input on you're mixer for a microphone?

cool thanks guys...It's kind of a long story, but with my set up, I've got two XLR inputs, and those are being used...this is for adding the 3rd mic into a TRS or 1/4" input...mostly for recording, but I use it for other stuff as well.

I've never heard of a 1/2" plug...

So all mics are males huh? :p

The thing to remember about XLR (aka Cannon) connections is that the pins always point in the direction of the signal flow.

Yes, and to add MadAudio's comment, all mixers are female.

Inputs, that is.

all mixers are female.

Yea but the blondes got pin 1 in the direction of signal flow pin 2 in the opposite direction and pin 3 is floating 69 volts above earth ground. Sometimes they hum alot God knows what they do with the phantom power.. :D

edit.... oops pin 1 is above ground

:) This post has become educational AND hysterical!

THANKS! :D
