making mixes better...

sometimes i mix and it comes out great, sometimes it comes out not so great. what can make this mix clearer and kick butt? i am a big fan of the randy staub mixes for nickelback and theory of a dead man. i dont like my snare i dont like my overheads its my band so maybe im just too picky.

The close snare mic is drier than the rest of the kit, and maybe 1dB upfront, and has that hollow piccolo echo, that may be what you don't like. The overhead is picking up the fills. Tune it down a 3rd, maybe? Add a hint of reverb about 4KHz?

The vocals and stringed instruments are mixed great.

BTW, "theory of a dead man"?

thanks for the input. the snare is a little squealer 5x12 and is a bit high. i put a pich shifter on it that lowers the snare a third but it sounds like its been pitch shifted. bummer. i would drumagog it but i dont have it :( how do you add reverb at a specific frequency?

Well, in Adobe Audition, the reverb plugins have sliders that let you pick the low pass and high pass points. Having reverb on just higher frequencies and not the full spectrum on certain sounds gives it a nice shimmer without it sounding too "wet"; sometimes you can get away with longer decay times without deleterious effect...
 
i guess this must be the best mix of anything ever since im not hearing too much feedback. what ive gotten so far has been great.

Man,this sounds great! You're too picky! LOL, seriously though, good song, great performance, solid mix.....I love the way you've recorded/mixed the vocals....and everything else....

Really really good mix , I enjoyed listening to it a lot. Awesome vocals in my opinion .. is that you? sounds good regardless. I felt that after the first verse the vocals were a little quieter during the chorus , I'm not quite sure if you were trying to do that but i felt like the chorus lyrics were lower. I dont know if I'd rather have the chorus lyrics louder or the verses lyrics lower. Did you use much or any compression on the vocals really? Forgive me if you did , I still have new ears to these sort of things.

I enjoyed every second of that song , well written , well performed , well recorded , and well .. done. :)
 
Sounds really good - the 1st verse has some buried vocals - mainly because they're delivered so fast.
Glad this mix sounds nothing like Dimefront & co.
The screams are a nice touch - makes the DM screambleeders look pallid.
 
I must say, theres only a very small percentage of this music that i can dig.... and this definitely falls into it.
