Hey everyone, You guessed it, I'm a newbie. I have seen so much great info on this site and wanted to ask a possibly stupid question. I have tons of Vinyls at home and wanted to make a mix Cd (Mixtape style) of songs that i know i wont be able to find. I have been reading the subject on burning cds and this is my question, Do i record all of the songs to DAT and then record them into my protools or Cool Edit Pro and then put markers on them? How will the CD software know what tracks are which? I would think that you would record everything together, but my brain gets fried on the process that comes after.Even though this is for my personal use, I would like to know how to do this properly. If anyone can help me I would gladly appreciate it.

Record them seperately into protools or cool edit so that each song is its own file. When you write to disc your software for the burner may allow you to name each track, time, etc.. which will be written to the cd. For the songs, its usually just a drag and drop process.
Also, there are some good plug-ins to get rid of LP scratch noises...unless you want that effect on your CD.

It is also worth noting that "phono" outputs are a totally different animal than say a cassette player. You may need to get something with a dedicated phono input and a standard line out. Maybe your home stereo reciever has this already. In that case, play the record but instead of connecting your turntable directly to the computer, plug the tape player "record" output into the computer. This will make use of the phono preamp in the reciever and give you a quote unquote line level signal to work with.

I guess it depends on how old your turntable is. I haven't looked at newer ones, so this may not apply. The ones I remember were like that tho... just something to be aware of.

And no, you don't have to go to DAT first. Going right into the interface on your computer setup should work fine.

Hope this helps!

Later
