I'm almost at the point of fabricating my mic cables for the studio. Got a good deal on Neutrik XLR connectors but now I'm looking at mic cable. So what's a good brand/part number and why? What do you think about Mogami, Canare, Belden, etc. Right now I'm looking at some Mogami 2552 cable. Also, since I'll be buying 500-600 feet of cable, can mic cable also be used for headphone extension cables?

Thanks,
DD

When I have built my own I normally have used either the Mogami or the Belden.

If you have an electronic refurbish/surplus store they sometimes carry military surplus cable (usually Belden). The military stuff is great because they only buy the best and you can get unbelieveable proces on it.

Once picked up a 27 paired Belden cable of 600 feet in length for only 35.00.

Was able to wire my studio. Sold 200' of it to another studio for 125.00. What a deal.

Good luck.

Oz - that Flex2000 cable seemed a little pricey at 55-65 cents a foot. I used Marshall Soundrunner digital 12 pair in my walls but I got a great price on it through eBay - 90 cents a foot. What I need to do now is make the individual mic cables. Most will be 25 foot and 10 foot.

David - yeah I work on a Marine Base. I watch the auctions but they're fewer (local) are usually 99% crap. I used to repair electronic test equipment for a guy who made his living buying from those auctions. It worked out great until he brought in some equipment he paid way too much for and it had gone through a hurricane down in Miami. This pile of shit actually had sand, salt and seaweed inside. He got pissed because I wouldn't touch it even after I warned him not to buy it. Moral of story - saltwater and electronics do not mix!!!
