is it possible to get a good sound out of drums with a shure sm57 and 58 as equipment? how about placement. this forum is great!

There may be a couple of ways to go. I would set the 57 about 9-10' high, right behind the drummer, pointing at the mounted toms (as an overhead). Then I would put the 58 about 5-6' in front of the drums, pointed at a point right between the top of the kick and the bottom of the mounted toms (as a room mic). However, the mix of these mics would only give you a "mono" signal.

An option would be putting both mics above the drums in a traditional "stereo" overhead position.

Take the ball off the sm58 first thing and mic the kick with it...then walk around the room while someone is playing the kit and find where you are getting a good overall balance, esp. the snare and hi-hit and put the sm57 there....usually just out front and above the kick drum pointed toward the snare is good....sometimes behind the drummer is good....experiment.....

Good idea Gidge.

Remember though that if you can't get the sound you want it might also help to hang some sound reflecting material around the drums to focus the sounds toward the mics. Or you might even need to hang some blankets to absorb the sound.

When you are working with limited mics, the general rule of thumb is to make the environment more compatible with the sound you are trying to achieve.
